Organization Profile:

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7.8 million children by constructing more than 1,700 schools, establishing over 16,000 libraries, publishing 882 new children’s book titles in 27 local languages, and reaching over 25,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program.

Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$44 million and our global staff numbers over 600. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.

Position Overview:

The Pupil Book Design Contractor is part of the Literacy Team, and is responsible for making recommendations to improve the pupil books that are a part of our Grade 1 and 2 instruction program. The contractor for this position will analyze Room to Read created textbook content to make recommendations about opportunities for improvement. He/she will then provide a training to the global Literacy team, develop sample template materials, and provide guidelines and support for future efforts with instructional materials.

The contractor may be based anywhere within the U.S. and will work from his/her home or personal office, and will report to the Associate Director of Literacy, Quality Reading Materials in San Francisco, CA. Work will take place from June-December 2015 and total approximately 160 hours.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Analyze Room to Read pupil textbook pages
Make recommendations for improving Room to Read textbook design
Create template pupil textbook pages for future Quality Reading Materials textbook related efforts
Create guidelines for how to design textbook pages, both written and in a power point presentation
Review Quality Reading Material Design Guidelines and create a training power point presentation
Train Room to Read Global Office Literacy staff on recommendations, sample pages and guidelines/power point content

Qualifications:
Required:

B.S./B.A. or course work in relevant subject
Experience in textbook design and layout for early elementary school
Strong communication and organizational skills
Adept at using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
Proficiency in oral and written English

Preferred:

Experience in picture book design
BFA in Design or related field
