Research and Analysis Associate – Direct Relief – Santa Barbara, CA

Reporting to the Director of Research and Analysis, the Research and Analysis Associate is responsible for providing data analysis, background research, program evaluation and informatics support to all aspects of humanitarian medical relief efforts internationally and within the US. Critical areas of support include GIS (Geographic Information Systems), survey design, data visualization, statistical modeling and research for public health program design and strategy. In addition to a strong quantitative background, the successful candidate should be a skillful writer and a comfortable public speaker, able to work independently and learn new skills regularly, with enthusiasm for humanitarian relief, public health and medical assistance efforts.

SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide analytic support, including cartography and spatial analysis, statistical modeling and business intelligence, for a wide array of humanitarian programs and relief projects
Develop survey tools for data collection in online and mobile / field contexts
Design data visualizations to support humanitarian programs and communicate the results of relief activities
Collaborate on the creation of new analytic and informatics projects to promote innovation, effectiveness and excellence in humanitarian assistance
Regularly inform and enrich the background content of program design and implementation through targeted research efforts
Participate in the design and implementation of program monitoring and evaluation structures
Write reports, blog posts, grant proposals, and research papers for publications targeted at both general and specialist audiences
Speak in public as a representative of Direct Relief at a variety of different events, from academic and professional conferences to corporate and public sector meetings
Coordinate with Emergency Response team on disaster response analytics as required

Qualification, Knowledge, and Skills:

Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred, including but not limited to public health, geography, public policy, economics and informatics
Background in one or more key areas of data analysis, data science, data visualization, demography, GIS, health informatics, econometrics and survey design
High level of comfort with analytics and data management technologies, including but not limited to aspects of Excel, Stata, SPSS, ArcGIS, Qlik, Tableau and Qualtrics.
Strong writer able to work quickly and fluently in a number of different forms, including grant proposals, background memos, blog posts and research publications
Capable public speaker with experience in professional conference presentations or comparable venues.
Able to work independently and collaboratively, both in face-to-face and online forms.
Able to manage multiple, diverse projects simultaneously
