We are currently seeking a talented, experienced, full-time Senior Editor, STEM Content to join our dynamic education team. The Senior Editor, STEM Content will manage a team of reviewers who rate and review educational technologies for learning potential and educational use on our teacher-facing platform, Common Sense Graphite. The STEM Editor will also manage the integration of the Next Generation Science Standards into the Graphite platform and oversee alignment of existing and future content to these standards. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on a premier service that reaches nearly 90,000 schools, more than 200,000 educators, and countless students.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As Senior Editor, STEM Content, you’ll manage a team of reviewers who rate edtech tools for their quality and learning potential in the classroom. You’ll edit reviews of education-focused apps, websites, games, and online curricula in consultation with our Graphite content team, contribute to the department’s overall editorial and content strategy, and author content, including articles for educators, recommended lists, and instructional advice related to media and technology. You will also work closely with our Senior Manager of Education Content to successfully integrate the Next Generation Science Standards into the Graphite platform.

KEY DECISION MAKING

The Senior Editor, STEM Content, will:

Research, assign, and edit reviews of apps, games, websites, and online curricula for educators, and publish them online on Common Sense Graphite
Manage part of our freelance reviewer team, and hire new reviewers as needed
Research and stay current with new trends in STEM-focused educational technology and important topics related to media use by teachers and students
Track and meet review goals and deadlines
Coordinate with the education content team to ensure publication of timely reviews
Assess the learning potential and ratings of tech tools in conjunction with other senior staff
Oversee the integration of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into Graphite
Manage the alignment of Graphite content to the NGSS
Create themed editorial content calendar and program homepages for STEM on Graphite
Contribute to our overall editorial and content strategy
Create recommended lists focused on science, tech, engineering, and math
Interface with education team members to create articles about educational technologies and media use in schools
Edit the work of other staffers, as needed
Serve as a resource on STEM-focused topics and be the organization’s in-house expert on NGSS

WHAT WE NEED TO SEE ON YOUR RESUME

Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred
Experience managing and editing in an online environment preferred
Excellent writing and editing skills (including copyediting proficiency); experience writing reviews or blogging about learning products
5-10 years education or classroom experience in the area of science education — teaching or working directly with kids or teachers (additional experience in math education a plus)
Working knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards
Deep knowledge of edtech — education apps, games, websites, and online curricula
Firsthand experience and knowledge about digital media and learning
Knowledge of trends in digital learning, assessment, and tech-forward schooling
Early adoption of technology and social media
Experience in gaming (online gaming, social network gaming, virtual worlds) a plus
Familiarity with the Common Core State Standards and other education metadata initiatives
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheets
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
Extremely keen attention to detail
Proven ability to create content that is educator-friendly, creative, fun, informative, SEO optimized
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, highly focused, highly productive environment
