Social Media Editor – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – New York, NY

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.4 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 450 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Livingston, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is looking for a social media editor to help be the voice of our organization on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, Instagram, Reddit, Vine, Snapchat and anyplace else the social web might take us. As part of our growing social media team, you’ll manage existing feeds for the main NRDC brand, while also working with our Social Media Director to look for opportunities on other platforms and innovative ways to reach new supporters. We need someone who can think creatively about community engagement and find fresh ways to build public support for NRDC-crafted solutions to the world’s toughest environmental problems.

You will play a key role in rapid response to daily news, making sure we stay in the bloodstream of what people are talking about right now on social media. You will also work with other aspects of NRDC’s Communications Division, including campaigns, marketing, youth engagement, and media relations, to create content designed to motivate activists, achieve policy goals, build membership and support, and increase our reach and influence. You will understand the mission and brand of NRDC and relish the idea of representing it with creativity, nimbleness, and poise in the social space. In this job, you’ll be on the frontlines every day and love it.

Responsibilities:

Provide hands-on daily management of NRDC’s key social media channels.
Monitor breaking news and social conversation, crafting creative and responsive social media messages and memes that illuminate key NRDC positions in real time.
Increase NRDC’s audience size and engagement metrics across social streams.
Consult and coordinate with advocacy campaigns, executing social media strategy for achieving policy goals.
Live tweet big news events like presidential speeches, election results, protests and other shared cultural milestones with an NRDC-infused point of view.
Work with colleagues to develop and execute strategies for promotion and awareness of major reports, court decisions, and other public education and engagement opportunities.
Organize and manage live events and public interaction via social streams, such as Hangouts, Twitter chats, Reddit AMAs, and other venues.
Review, monitor, collect, and report analytics data for key social media accounts.
Monitor social media industry news and trends to keep NRDC competitive.
Cover some weekends and holidays as needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree or greater.
At least 3-5 years of experience in a social media or engagement role, preferably at a news organization, political campaign, nimble nonprofit, or agency that requires rapid response capability.
Excellent writing skills with a knack for distilling stories into short, compelling copy for a digital audience.
The ability to understand and adopt a “voice” that matches the one we will be establishing for NRDC in the digital space (light touch, conversational tone, highly accessible, pop culture-infused, smart but not snotty).
Strong strategic and tactical editorial skills, honed by previous experience.
Hands-on experience with social media tools such as Google Analytics, Chartbeat, CrowdTangle, Bitly, Sprout Social, Hootsuite Enterprise, Tweetdeck, or Social Flow.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, organize time, and identify resources for projects as needed.
Experience with Google Adwords and/or promoted social media posts.
Experience organizing and managing live online events.
Basic knowledge of HTML.
