Position Overview
Shining Stars Montessori Academy PCS (SSMA) and the Episcopal Center for Children (ECC) are looking to share an experienced Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) to support our students from PreK3 through the 8th grade.The SLP is responsible for organizing and implementing the speech and language program to meet the educational goals of students as outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). This full time position will be shared approximately 50% at each location (11 months).
Under the general supervision of the Director of Academic Support and Clinical Services at SSMA and the Director of Related Services Services & Activities at ECC, the SLP will provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, and fluency. The SLP will provide direct services to students who need speech and language supports inside the classroom, small group instruction, or one-on-one as needed. Preferred candidates will have experience with oral motor skills, childhood development, PECS, ABA/VB strategies, and/or Floortime.
Essential Functions & Accountabilities
Provide high quality direct speech-language therapy services to students according to students’ IEPs in both push-in and pull-out settings
Conduct assessments, analyze results, and write reports to determine strengths and concerns in areas of speech, voice, fluency, pragmatics, language, and/or oral motor skills
Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing and referring suspected and identified speech and language delays/disorders
Demonstrate ability to use the appropriate assistive and/or adaptive instructional technologies to meet the needs of students with an IEP, if needed
Participate in eligibility determination and IEP meetings collaboratively and interpret evaluation results as needed
Proficient in writing annual and short-term SLP goals, progress reports, and annual reviews that reflect strength-based philosophies that are aligned with curriculum-based, developmentally appropriate standards
Consult with teaching teams to develop and implement curriculum modifications and accommodations as well as appropriate classroom strategies, including visual supports, oral motor exercises and data collection
Participate, if needed, in the Child Outcome Study process with learning specialists
Participate in meetings for parents, as well as identify resources for parents of students with special needs
Design and conduct trainings for parents and families related to receptive and expressive language skills
Maintain an inventory of materials, assessment and supplies
Document all aspects of work with students in Special Education Data System (SEDS)/EasyIEP according to school and state guidelines, including missed services
Communicate and coordinating with schools’ administration to ensure school mission, philosophy and procedures are embraced
Other duties as assigned, including participating in school events outside of regular school hours when needed
Required Competencies & Qualifications
Experience in helping students achieve speech and language goals in a school setting
Experience in conducting SLP observations, screenings and evaluations utilizing best practice test materials
Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills
Ability to present information in a group and individual setting using strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to prepare clear and concise reports
Possess knowledge of the fundamentals of IDEA and its impact in the discipline and knowledge of young children’s characteristics, need and socio-emotional development
Strong time management and organizational skills
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment and the ability to work positively with parents and families
Demonstrate the capacity for independent work and flexibility
Willingness to work in two locations within Washington DC
Commitment to upholding both SSMA and ECC’s mission and confidentiality of students and parents
Education and Experience
Eligible for the Speech and Language Pathologist certification through OSSE and the DOH
Master’s degree (MA/MS) in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology
AHSA certified or eligible for AHSA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
At least 1-3 years of classroom experience working with students with special education needs
Experience with data systems preferred (SEDS, DC CATS, child outcome summary, SLED)
Passes background check and drug testing
