DESCRIPTION
The News Literacy Project (NLP) is looking for a full-time visual designer who has a passion for journalism and for news literacy education, particularly involving students in grades 6 through 12. If you’re weary of the agency treadmill, or feel stifled by the predictable output in your corporate role, this is a great opportunity for you to have your work be widely seen and appreciated by an eager public and appreciative students and teachers.
About NLP
The News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that works with educators and journalists to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the checkology® virtual classroom, an online e-learning platform. The virtual classroom has experienced significant growth since its launch in May 2016. To date, more than 9,200 teachers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories and 69 other countries have registered to use it.
About the position
Our small and distributed team needs an all-around design talent who can start with an idea and take it through to its final form — creating illustrations, spot imagery, layouts, infographics, animation, GIFs and other visual elements that will enliven and enrich our daily content, online curriculum and ongoing marketing campaigns. The successful candidate will be conversant in digital culture and journalism, and passionate about helping people learn online.
There is intense public interest in NLP’s work, and we are experiencing tremendous growth. The ideal candidate will hit the ground running, be both collaborative and unafraid to experiment, and have an easygoing nature and sense of fun.
Job responsibilities
In this job, you will:
● Work simultaneously on a variety of projects under the direction of several team members, including our leads for communications, education and digital production.
● Create visually compelling graphics and imagery for use with our website, email, social media channels, video and education platforms.
● Consult and collaborate with contractors and external teams as necessary to create cohesive design systems that reflect our brand and our audiences.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate will have most or all of the following:
● BA/BFA in digital and visual design or a strong portfolio equivalent.
● Solid understanding of UI and UX principles and best practices.
● Familiarity with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.
● Extensive experience with Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign or Sketch for web design, presentations and social campaigns.
● Demonstrable experience with infographics and visual work that explains concepts.
● 4+ years in a hands-on design role, within either an agency or an organization.
● Strong, proactive communication skills with colleagues, contractors and vendors.
● Ability to meet tight deadlines and stay within budget.
● Experience with virtual work environment (both technology tools and personal skills).
Compensation and Benefits
Salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, and more. The successful candidate will live in the Washington, D.C., area and work primarily from home, with occasional meetings at NLP’s office near the Friendship Heights Metro stop.
