YOUTH LED MEDIA STATEWIDE COORDINATOR
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
New America Media dba Pacific News Service (NAM) is a San Francisco-based non-profit news and media organization working to amplify the voices of ethnic and youth media content producers across the United States. NAM operates a unique youth-led media initiative made up of five (5) hubs around California that train local high school program participants to develop multi-media production skill set in the craft of journalism by covering the issues impacting their local communities, and while leveraging program alumni as mentors and content producers. The NAM Youth Led Media (YLM) hub network is sponsored by The California Endowment (TCE) and is part of the TCE Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative.
NAM is searching for a qualified leader for the position of YLM Statewide Coordinator to compliment its youth development work by ensuring the alignment of YLM content production activities with BHC priority focus areas, and developing and maintaining a network of community-based organization (CBO) leaders and state policy-makers and influencers to inform about the YLM work. The YLM Statewide Coordinator will further track and report any resulting legislative/policy shifts for California youth and their current issues.
The YLM Statewide Coordinator position will be based in Fresno, California, and will report directly to the San Francisco-based NAM YLM Program Director – and it will interface and collaborate on a regular and frequent basis with NAM YLM hub coordinators, as well as the Fresno-based TCE Statewide BHC Program Director and local TCE BHC program coordinators. Travel to the various YLM hub sites will be necessary from time to time. The YLM Statewide Coordinator is expected to perform his/her responsibilities by participating in the necessary meetings and events relevant to the related responsibilities in person, by teleconference, or web. The position is full-time exempt salaried.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Alignment of YLM Content Production with BHC Priority Areas
Create, maintain, and follow a plan of action with detailed activities for remaining informed and current regarding BHC priorities statewide as well as for the communities the YLM hubs touch.
Liaise with TCE Statewide BHC Program Director for statewide BHC priorities.
Liaise with local community TCE BHC program officers for local community BHC priorities.
Interface with NAM YLM Program Director and hub coordinators to ensure continuous communication of BHC priorities and updates/changes to those priorities.
Develop and implement, under the guidance of the YLM Program Director, the vehicle for the YLM organization to determine the daily editorial agenda that will ensure alignment with the BHC initiatives and priorities.
Monitor YLM multi-media content production and communicate and continually reinforce project deliverable alignment expectations.
Expand Support Network for YLM Hubs
Create, maintain, and follow a plan of action with detailed activities for identifying and interfacing with key partners in the communities the YLM hubs touch.
Liaise with and develop relationships with important BHC partners and CBOs that can provide input and feedback to help inform and strengthen youth media content, as well as seek ways to support and give visibility to their work – thereby creating a win-win model for collaborations.
Connect YLM hubs to potential new avenues for youth recruitment by leveraging BHC partner and CBO relationships.
Develop channels for the youth development pipeline that can lead to internship and paid position opportunities with BHC partner and CBO relationships.
Monitor the effectiveness of the building and leveraging of the network of relationships for the hub work and recommend adjustments as needed.
Promote YLM Work to Policy Makers and Other Key Stakeholders
Create, maintain, and follow a plan of action with detailed activities for identifying and interfacing with policy makers and key stakeholders to promote the YLM hub work.
Liaise with and develop relationships with policy makers and key stakeholders in a way that can inform their perceptions and work regarding issues of importance to youth constituents, including youth development and leadership opportunities, and the role of youth in building and maintaining healthy local communities.
Connect policy makers and key stakeholders to youth voices that could strengthen policy and change-agent work efforts and outcomes.
Develop and implement social media strategies to target these key individuals and entities thereby promoting and expanding the reach and impact of YLM content for tangible change.
Monitor the effectiveness of the policy maker and key stakeholder network of relationships for the influencing change and recommend adjustments as needed.
General Organizational Responsibilities
Stay within allocated project budget for the YLM Statewide Coordinator activities.
Provide feedback to YLM organization on opportunity areas and improvements – provide recommendations – assist in identifying activities that are delayed or at risk and help identify and implement solutions – and celebrate and give visibility to achievements attained.
Help identify and develop best practices and tools for execution and management.
POSITION SKILL SET REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent highly preferred.
At least 5 years of demonstrated experience of successfully conducting network management activities and influencing decision-makers – relationship skills are a required asset.
Familiarity with local/state youth policy would be an important asset, as would be experience at working with youth – adeptness at researching issues would also be favorable.
Strong written and oral communication skills – background in journalism and/or communications would be a big plus.
Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
Ease with communication styles of managers, team members, contractors, colleagues, and internal/external stakeholders who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines, titles, levels, and backgrounds.
Strong interpersonal skills – is persuasive, out-going, and motivating – has the ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of colleagues and partners – can defuse dissension and overcome hurdles, should they arise.
Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities – reacts to adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently – flexibility and willingness to adjust and pivot as work progresses and possible changes are needed.
Adeptness in use of software/application tools (Excel, MS Project, Word, etc.) as well as at using and leveraging social media – must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.
Ability to speak and write in Spanish is highly desired.
Must be willing and able to travel as needed for successful execution of deliverables.
