New York City Montessori Charter School, the first and only Montessori public school in New York City for students in Preschool through 5th grade, seeks an experienced educator to serve as a Special Education Lead Teacher in our 4th/5th grade classroom. NYCMCS provides an innovative, nurturing, safe and educationally appropriate learning environment for all of our children. Working independently and in small groups, our students learn through hands-on exploration as they further develop their foundational skills for academic success, global awareness, and engaged learning. We are looking for an idealistic and enthusiastic special education teacher with teaching experience to join our team. We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
Requirements:
State Certification
A Master’s Degree, or higher, in Special Education
Experience in public education
Strong written and oral communication skills
Team-oriented, flexible, and reliable
Montessori experience or training a plus
Understanding of and commitment to the mission and purpose of New York City Montessori Charter School
Expectations include the following:
Provide individual or small group instruction for students who require additional academic support
Differentiate small group instruction for students with special needs
Prepare student individualized education plans in consultation with staff and families to ensure success for all students
Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards
Assist in the development of a dynamic and engaging developmentally appropriate program to meet the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of second and third graders
Integrate a variety of teaching strategies and tools (including technology) into classroom activities
Communicate thoughtfully and professionally with parents and colleagues regarding curriculum, students, and developmental issues, verbally and in written form
Create a warm, nurturing classroom atmosphere in which children feel comfortable and secure, along with an atmosphere of support and safety to encourage children to experience new skills and discover a love of learning
Aid in planning interdisciplinary units of study using Core Curriculum, Montessori and project-based curriculum that inspire children to investigate and research
Develop and utilize student portfolios of work to tailor and differentiate curriculum to individual students
Provide positive guidance to help children navigate through their social relationships with peers and adults
Develop and maintain open communication with parents keeping them informed of the ongoing activities
Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, participation in school obligations, and a respectful attitude in professional relationships
Demonstrate a growth mindset and willingness to explore opportunities for professional growth and engagement in 21stCentury teaching strategies
Demonstrate integrity, patience, openness, sensitivity, enthusiasm and friendliness
Collaborate with fellow colleagues to maintain continuity of curriculum across grade levels
Implement strategies on student IEPs
Help to foster learning and growth in the classroom
