Literacy Source is a non-profit community learning center in Seattle providing free instruction to more than 500 adults annually from underserved populations. Our mission is to build a literate community and promote self-sufficiency by providing learner-centered instruction in English literacy and basic life skills. Literacy Source encourages and celebrates life-long learning and works to create a society that understands and supports the needs of adult learners.
The Instructional Advisor is responsible for teaching ABE classes, providing overall instructional case management to 30-40 adult learners, and working as part of the leadership instructional advisory team to develop and coordinate classes, plan training and provide support for volunteer instructors & tutors. Additionally, the Instructional Advisor will be a resource for staff and volunteers in the area of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and technology instruction, keeping abreast of current trends, issues, and research related to these fields. Essential duties and responsibilities include:
Instruction and Student Support
Teaching
Teach and/or supervise ABE classes – including Reading and Writing, Math, GED Preparation
Create lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse learners
Administer assessments, track student progress and provide feedback and support to students
Act as Lead in working with Community Colleges to align ABE curriculum with HS 21+
Design Canvas interface/extension for current ABE courses
Advising
Assist with new student orientations, conduct student intake interviews, support center-wide assessments, and enroll students in classes.
Work with students to establish goals and identify challenges or barriers to learning; connect students with support resources including matching with individual tutors; provide support and advocacy to help learners make progress in achieving literacy & life skills goals.
Monitor and interpret on-going assessment results to track and support student progress, provide learning recommendations to students and instructors.
Monitor student attendance in classes and follow-up with calls to absent students.
Technology Integration
Supervise center-based on-line learning classes and Distance Learning program
Work with Instructional Director and instructors to ensure digital learning skills are integrated into all basic skills classes
Work with center staff and volunteers to implement center-wide digital literacy goals
Serve as instructional lead and resource on Canvas for ABE and ESL instructors
Volunteer Management, Support and Supervision
With support of the Instructional Director and advising team –
Help develop, conduct and evaluate volunteer trainings to align with learning standards.
Provide on-going support to volunteer tutors, including pre-match meeting, TRIO meetings, tutor cohort meetings, and regular check-ins regarding curriculum and instruction.
Provide on-going support and supervision to volunteer instructors.
Grants Management and Advocacy:
Work with staff and Board to develop strategies for increasing awareness of literacy issues, including supporting advocacy efforts to educate policymakers and mobilize allies.
Provide program updates for inclusion in monthly e-news and on website
Work with Executive Director to prepare ABE related funding proposals and SBCTC grants.
Manage relevant grants and contracts, including tracking and monitoring outcomes and submitting reports and invoices as needed.
Office and Other:
Assist with ongoing office activities, including phone answering, opening and closing office.
Participate in regular agency staff meetings and advisor meetings.
Contribute to and support long-term strategic planning along with Board members and other staff.
Other tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications:
A degree in Adult Education, Education, social work, or a related field.
Two years of experience teaching ABE or GED to an adult population.
Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and facility with computers and technology;
Experience serving low-income, low-level adult learners who face multiple challenges.
Familiarity with the GED and/or High School 21+.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competence in interpersonal relationships and group facilitation.
Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a busy office environment.
Strong computer and organizational skills. Proficiency in Canvas (or another LMS), Microsoft Office, and Outlook.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.
Desired Qualifications:
A Master’s Degree in Adult Education, Education or a related field.
Experience working in a non-profit agency with volunteers and clients of diverse backgrounds.
Experience teaching math

Literacy Source is currently located in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle. We will be moving our Learning Center to Lake City – 3200 NE 125th Street in April, 2016. This position will be based out of our Learning Center in Lake City.
