General Function:
Under the leadership of the Site Supervisor, the Unit Leader will be responsible for providing leadership to the overall supervision and successful execution of one of the units within the youth program. The unit leader is expected to be a positive role model for staff and participants and provide a safe environment conducive for growth development. The unit leader will supervise the site when the site supervisor is not present. The unit leader will work directly with multiple groups of youth as well as support administrative functions as needed.
Qualifications:
High school graduate with some college coursework desire. Must be available EVERY WEEK DAY, Monday through Friday from 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Minimum of two years of youth work experience. Must be 20 years of age or older. Must be prepared to go into the pool! Current CPR/First Aid/AED certifications a plus.
Principle Activities:
1. Supervising counselors within a program unit: monitor performance and provide support, while holding staff accountable for performance expectations.
2. Assume leadership and responsibility of program in the absence of Site Supervisor.
Be knowledgeable in all aspects of the job by keeping him/her-self informed as to what is happening within the groups they supervise.
3. Provide assistance or coverage for staff within the groups they supervise as required. Participate in the development and facilitation of program training. Attend 30 hours of pre-after school staff training.
4. Be able to motivate staff and keep up morale. Promote the YMCA spirit within the program.
5. Be a consistent role model for staff and children.
6. Ensure that facility is kept clean and safe, based on the Y standards and Risk Management requirements, so that children are in a safe and comfortable environment.
7. Ensure that the staff and children know and follow safety procedures during programs. Report all incidents in accordance with the Y policies and procedures.
8. Ensure that all staff follow the guidelines regarding trips and travel.
9. Adhere to all Y After School, Youth, HR and Risk Management standards, as well as Department of Children and Families and Board of Education standards, if applicable.
10. Participate in planning and implementation of all camp and childcare activities, including but not limited to learning initiatives, Gear Up support, and events. Assist in marketing efforts including parent open houses, flyer distribution, and speaking to others about YMCA programs.
11. Work with counselors to develop and implement engaging and educational program elements, including but not limited to STEM, and Healthy U.
12. Regularly communicate to guardians through clear and positive written and verbal messages.
13. Support youth development events, family engagement plans, open houses, fundraisers and branch based projects & activities. Complete administrative and advance planning tasks for current program and other seasonal programs. Support future administrative Gear Up for upcoming youth programs.
14. Be willing to support and/or travel to other programs as needed.
15. Other duties as assigned.

The responsibilities of this position will be satisfactorily met when:
Leadership standards within all key areas are met, site operations run smoothly when site supervisor is off site, lesson plans prepared, fun, innovative, and age-appropriate, all activities are progressing under the proper policies and procedures, and participants are having fun, are safe and learning the importance of good principles. Administrative requests are complete and gear up of assigned youth programs are complete including current and upcoming programming.
