Responsible for education and expanded core curriculum services for youth of all ages who are blind and visually impaired. Supervise all teachers of the visually impaired, children’s orientation and mobility specialists, and other specialized professionals. Responsible for coordinating monthly and summer youth and family programs for CLB, including transition programming. Responsible for coordinating education services in Early Intervention, Strong Start Program, Charter, and Public Schools.
25% of this position will focus on Early Intervention and TVI Services
75% of this position will focus on Parent Outreach, Expanded Core and Transition Programming
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Monitor and supervise CLB’s education services staff including TVI, O&M, and other specialized instructors.
Monitor students’ progress through reports, ongoing discussions, and meetings with students and staff.
Perform annual and quarterly staff goals and performance reviews
Provide all necessary documentation for staff, including expense reports and timesheets
TVI and Early Intervention Responsibilities:
Manage administrative responsibilities for Early Intervention Programming
Identify children needing low vision examinations and coordinate scheduling with low vision services and follow-up services.
Evaluate visual functional levels using various assessment tools.
Support parents and other professionals in understanding the child’s visual impairment and provide resource information on how to work with blind or low vision young children.
Provide instruction for students who are blind or visually impaired by developing, selecting and modifying instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of students utilizing Braille, large print and technological devices.
Recommend and participate in development of IEP goals, and attend all IEP meetings for each student served.
Ensure all students receive appropriate services including; Independent Living skills, technology, and braille transcription.
Complete all reports and mandatory documentation for each student’s plan and school record.
Communicate with parents and family members to offer resources and support on behalf of each student
Serve as an Educational &Transition liaison with area vocational rehabilitation agencies.
Expanded Core and Transition Program Responsibilities:
Create and manage a region wide program that includes parents, school vision staff, students, community providers and advocacy groups with a focus on creating regular comprehensive expanded core and transition activities for parents and students with visual impairments from birth through transition age.
Organize monthly meetings with the following components in coordination with vision professionals from the region:
# Parent Seminar
# Early Intervention Play Group
# Children’s Programming for ages 5-12
# Pre-Transition Programming for student 12-15
# Pre-Employment Transition Programming for students 16-24
Organize a Summer Transition Program based on best practices.
Oversee and manage annual events such as summer camps, holiday parties, enrichment programs, transition, and swimming and other recreational and sports activities in collaboration with the Communications Department.
Recruit, train and manage volunteers for specific outreach events in coordination with the Communications and Administrative Services Departments.
Serve as outreach liaison with partnership agencies such as; OSSE, DCPS, DC Charter Schools, Maryland Public Schools, YMCA, MSB, Delta Gamma, etc.
Additional Responsibilities:
Provide oral and written reports of evaluations and programs.
Participate in long-range planning and policy development by providing input to senior management concerning resources and trends in service provision to persons who are blind or visually impaired.
Conduct in-service training to education professionals regarding blindness issues and CLB programs and services.
Prepare monthly billing, statistics, reports and relevant correspondence about and for consumers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field with TVI certification.
Eligibility for or current endorsement/vision certification in Early Childhood Special Education in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
Must be able and willing to travel independently throughout metro area to family’s homes and schools.
5 years of experience in a school setting, family center, or community based program for youth and children with vision and multiple disabilities.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to organize and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
Computer literacy with MS office and Windows.
Manage and oversee an inner-disciplinary team serving each student and family with CLB, community partners, and families.
