POSITION SUMMARY

The Bayview Hunter’s Point YMCA, Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School and the San Francisco Beacon Initiative seeks a Collaborative Director with expertise in strategic organizational leadership, developing vision-driven programming, supporting skilled personnel in the founding development of the Beacon Center at Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School (WBMS).

The School: Willie L. Brown, Jr. Middle School (WBMS), a brand new public middle school in the historic Bayview Community of San Francisco, presents a rare opportunity for committed, passionate, and creative teachers to fully manifest their talents to educate children in a STEM focused academic program. With an extended school day and year, WBMS, is designed to optimize the learning time of students by providing more preparation and instruction time for teachers. In the fall of 2015 we will enthusiastically welcome our pioneering class of 200 excited and motivated sixth graders.

San Francisco Unified School District’s Vision 2025 places access and equity, student achievement, and accountability at the forefront of every child’s education. The ideas and actions in the plan focus on one central idea: every child has the right to be well-educated. SFUSD hires teachers and other credentialed professionals who are committed to delivering rigorous instruction to all students, continuous learning and improvement, creating a culturally responsive classroom environment, and building meaningful connections with families and the community. The Beacon: San Francisco Beacon Initiative (SFBI) is a citywide partnership launched by the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF), the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), private funders led by the Evelyn & Walter Haas Jr. Fund, and local community-based organizations (CBOs) in 1994. Each Beacon is developed by partnerships of existing community organizations (schools, service agencies, youth, parents and other community stakeholders) and managed by a lead agency, in collaboration with the school site. Representatives of SFBI’s governing body, the Beacon Steering Committee which includes representatives from DCYF, SFUSD, private funders, lead agencies and program alumni, provides oversight and guidance to the overall partnership.

The mission of the San Francisco Beacon Initiative is to transform public schools into youth, family and community centers. Drawing on the existing strengths of our students, schools and communities, Beacon Centers are committed to a cohesive, comprehensive and collaborative approach that creates pathways to lifelong learning.

Additionally, in the last few years the SFUSD has worked to adopt a community schools approach. That is, developing and implementing a coherent, school-based strategy to organize District and community resources around student success. The key characteristics of the district’s community schools approach are aligned with the fundamental goals and aims of the Beacon initiative since its inception:

Comprehensiveness – identifying he structures and processes needed to support a whole-child approach to student success
Collaboration and Coherence – embracing a shared vision and goals, in addition to integrating partners into school and program planning, decision-making and governance
Commitment –fostering the sustainability of relationships and effective practices through clear accountability for program quality and student outcomes.

A minimum of 5 years experience in administration and/or project management in a nonprofit setting.
A minimum of 5 years experience managing staff.
A minimum of 2 years experience managing program budgets.
Successful fund development experience, including grant writing and implementation of other fund development strategies.
Understanding of community- and school-based programming based upon Youth Development, the Learning In Afterschool & Summer Principles, the Common Core State Standards, and the Five Protective Factors.
Able to effectively communicate to individuals and groups, both orally and in writing.
Experience in providing broad-based services to diverse populations.
Knowledge of community and community building systems.
Courteous, professional, and able to reason logically.
Detail-oriented and well organized.
Able to establish and meet deadlines.
Has a passion for developing and sustaining quality services for youth and families, and a desire to learn and understand needs of YMCA/WBMS/SFBI’s constituents, staff, and partners.
Meets all state required conditions of employment as set forth by Community Care Licensing for a Licensed Community Care facility; i.e. Fingerprint and child Abuse Index clearance, TB/Health Physical, valid CDL and clean driving record.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Definition: The role to be reviewed & evaluated.

Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
Demonstrate the Character Counts values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
Demonstrate competencies in and willingness to develop in the Cause Driven Leadership areas of mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness and personal growth.
Oversee the development and implementation of Beacon programming. Manage initiatives to identify community needs, establish program priorities, and execute the strategic plans to address these needs and priorities..
Lead and supervise financial systems, including budgeting, grant implementation, and fund development. Ensure that financial targets are set and met on an annual basis.
Ensure that structures are in place for timely program data collection, regular reporting to funders, and punctual submission of invoices. Regularly monitor Beacon Center achievement of program goals.
Identify Beacon Center’s funding and resource needs, as well as strategies for filling these needs. Lead fund development and resource acquisition strategies, including vetting and pursuing public grant funds, private funding opportunities, and cultivating individual donors.
Provide leadership to all Beacon staff, including developing systems and structures for effective team communication, initiating opportunities for collaboration, and providing direct supervision to key staff positions.
Develop staff learning and professional growth by providing opportunities for professional development, evolving roles, and the exploration of best practices in youth and family services.
Review and approve all incoming and outgoing invoices, expenses, partnership agreements, and other documents requiring signatory approval.
Attend and actively represent Beacon constituents at meetings as required by funders, the San Francisco Beacon Initiative, and Bayview Hunter’s Point YMCA.
Represent the Beacon with all school and community partners to ensure a positive collaborative working relationship.
