Case Manager / Resource Coordinator – Next Generation Scholars – San Rafael, CA

The Opportunity

Next Generation Scholars believes equal access to higher education is the key to making positive change within our community. Our mission is to level the playing field by providing dedicated underserved students with all the advantages available to those of privilege, combining rigorous academics with wraparound social services. Our students are highly motivated and academically inclined young scholars, looking for a challenge.

The success of our program lays in personalized support for these students and their families. We’re currently looking for a Case Manager who will serve as the core of the social services program, interfacing with students, families, schools, and other social service providers to ensure effective and responsive support of the whole child. The Case Manager is responsible for providing continuous support, advocacy, and guidance for our students and families. The Case Manager will work with families to track and execute individual development plans for each student. Additionally, the Case Manager will manage NGS’s community partnerships, helping to maintain the relationships we’ve put in place to provide our students and their families a full complement of services.

Position Summary

Serve as primary contact person for students and families who need access to social services.
Plan and execute academic interventions, including identifying students of concern and connecting them with appropriate academic resources.
Work directly with partner organizations to ensure strong relationships and maintain access to new resources for our families.
Maintain database of student and family records.

Duties and Responsibilities

Student/Family Interaction

Schedule individual sessions with students on a monthly basis to review student progress and goals. (Bi-weekly meetings for students in crisis.)
Connect and coordinate academic and social service resources such as tutoring and counseling.
Serve as primary contact for families, teachers, schools, and service organizations.
Execute Parent College and home visit programs.
Facilitate our hot meal program, ensuring daily hot meals are prepared for our students
Maintain food parcel programs, including weekly trip to the food bank to stock pantry and preparing parcels for students and families in need.
With Director of Programs, Coordinate and chaperone junior year college trip.

Community Partnerships

Coordinate food and clothing donations from schools and local businesses that support our work.
Work directly with schools to understand students’
Weekly trips to food bank and other partner agencies to ensure pantry and ‘free store’ are always well stocked.
Serve as the NGS representative to other community organizations working towards educational equity in Marin.
Liaise with arts programming partners to ensure students’ access to quality arts programming, including setting class schedules and supporting visiting Teaching Artists.
Coordinate access to legal aid for families.
During summer, the sharing of facilities for our summer programming.

Volunteer Management

Screen, select, and coordinate volunteer tutors for various academic subjects through our partnership with Dominican University service learning programs.
Train and support tutors to ensure quality academic support.
Manage and support all parent/guardian volunteers.
During summer, recruit and train high school volunteers supporting our middle school students.

Administrative

Assess and maintain student academic profiles and records.
Review grades on a weekly basis and determine academic needs.
Track social service needs, family issues, health concerns, housing, and related areas of need.
Meet regularly with staff to develop and maintain a consistent approach to supporting our students and families.
Manage Administrative Assistant and ensure all administrative tasks are fulfilled.
Support staff with translations as needed.
Support Executive Director and Director of Programs develop any necessary materials for granting and reporting purposes.

Qualifications

3-5 years experience working with a youth-oriented facility and/or vulnerable populations.
A BA/BS from an accredited 4-year college or university.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to various situations.
Strong commitment to help young students succeed in all aspects.
Administrative experience, including collaborative work with parents and teachers.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Proven organizational skills.
A collaborative leadership style.
Courage to make difficult and/or unpopular decisions, when needed.
Initiative working with ambiguous instructions.
Capable of building “team” morale and shared vision.
A strong work ethic and a sense of humor.
Must be bilingual in English and Spanish.
