Children’s Violin Class Instructor – UpBeat NYC – Bronx, NY

Position: Children’s Violin Class Instructor

Start Date: February, 2015

Location: South Bronx, New York, NY

Description: El Sistema-inspired music education program for at-risk NYC children

Time Period: February-June 2015 plus 3 week summer session in July (with opportunity to continue the position indefinitely)

Mondays and Tuesdays 4-7pm

Duties:

Lead 3, one hour group violin classes twice/week for children ages 5-9
Coordinate with Lead String Teacher (an Abreu Fellow) – teaching philosophy, pedagogy, classroom management
Work directly with parents during classes training them to assist with their children’s at-home practice

Qualifications:

Extensive teaching experience in Suzuki violin pedagogy with groups of young children
Experience teaching box violin initiation classes
Fluent Spanish required
South Bronx resident highly preferred
Familiarity with the El Sistema philosophy

This position requires a high level of commitment to UpBeat’s mission of social justice through musical experience and music education. We are willing to train a candidate who is a South Bronx native with only modest teaching
experience if they have a passion for teaching in a community-based music education program and can commit to at least one full year of teaching.

Salary: $50/hour
