Position: Sports Specialist
Start Date: August 1st, 2015
Location: Opening in Los Angeles
Description: CoachArt is an organization that creates a transformative arts and athletics community for families impacted by childhood chronic illness. CoachArt is seeking a part-time Sports Specialist to research, plan, and facilitate one-on-one and group sports experiences for CoachArt participants between the ages of 5-18.
Duties include:
● Plan and lead four to six, 8-week sports activities throughout the year with assistance from CoachArt staff
● Plan and coach an 8-week one-on-one sports in-home/ community lesson
● Assist with planning annual All Star Games highlighting the sports techniques learned by CoachArt students throughout the year
● Assist with sports related curriculum research and development with an emphasis on
adaptive and inclusive coaching techniques
● Research low-cost/no-cost facilities for potential sports lessons. Assist with the booking process for sports events and activities.
● Design event flyers/email campaigns and assist with student and volunteer recruitment for sports-related activities.
● Facilitate access to sporting events and connecting with major sports teams; annual goal of 2 events.
● Send inquiries and follow-up for in-kind sports related donations.
● Develop training materials for CoachArt volunteers in best-practices of coaching chronically ill children and their siblings
● Conduct adaptive sports training to Volunteers
● Implement evaluation measures to CoachArt volunteers, students, and parents
● Complete 6 case studies throughout the year on individual CoachArt students with assistance from Coaching Manager
● Attendance tracking, student, parent, and facility evaluations and on-site lesson visits
● Optional: plan and lead up to two 1-day sports activities throughout the year
● Other duties include: general administrative tasks such as data entry, creating newsletters, confirmation letters, office organization, and answering phone calls
In addition to site-specific duties, Coach Across America Coaches are also responsible for the following CAA/AmeriCorps program elements:
Completing timesheets
Attend required CAA trainings
Reflecting on their work in guided reflection logs; and
Participating in a National Day of Service
Though high-paced and demanding, the CoachArt office is a fun work environment. This is an entry level position that is highly rewarding as it provides the ability to build relationships with creative individuals and wonderful CoachArt families throughout the San Francisco Bay Area or Los Angeles.
Requirements:
Associate’s Degree and at least one year of related work experience working with chronically ill youth preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above requirements.
Coaching experience in basketball, soccer, and/or baseball
3-5 years of experience playing team sports at the varsity level.
Adaptive recreation experience is preferred.
Volunteer experience working with youth, preferably in sports.
Excellent communication and planning skills required.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is required, with proficient written and verbal communication in both languages.
Good computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office Suite and databases.
Experience with Salesforce and Constant Contact preferred.
Energetic, fun and good people skills are a must!
Must be passionate about relationship building.
Ability to be persistent, yet patient with families, youth, and venue facilitators.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, attention to detail, organization and a positive attitude are essential.
Frequent weekend work for lessons are required.
A flexible weekday schedule for administrative tasks is available.
Hours: 20 hours/week
Schedule and Pay: The Sports Specialist will work on a part-time basis for one year totaling 900 hours. The Sports Specialist will receive a total living allowance of $7,200 (paid by Up2Us) as well as an education award of $2,775. The Living Allowance is not a salary; is taxed; is distributed in even amounts throughout 9 months (not connected to the number of hours served per pay period); will be paid at least twice monthly at the normal interval of the Host-site. In addition, the Sports Specialist will receive a CoachArt monthly stipend in the amount of $300/month. No other benefits are offered.
