Community Outreach / Education Coordinator – Death Penalty Focus – San Francisco, CA

The USA is one of the last industrialized countries to execute its own citizens, and the movement to end this practice centers on California. The state has the largest and most expensive death row in the Western Hemisphere, although there has not been a single execution in the last decade. Voters came within 2% of abolishing capital punishment in 2012, and, with the possibility of another ballot initiative on the horizon, California is poised to make history.

Death Penalty Focus (DPF), a non-profit working to end the death penalty, seeks a full-time Coordinator for its Community Outreach and Education team, based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Coordinator will work with the Director of Community Outreach and Education to organize supporters, expand public engagement, and mobilize the movement to end the death penalty in California. Specifically, the Coordinator will help manage DPF’s California chapters, its statewide coalition, and its current programs—such as Justice Advocates, Youth Outreach, California Crime Victims for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, and Law Enforcement Outreach. The Coordinator will also work with the Director and other staff to create and implement communications, advocacy, and organizing objectives, both in the field and online.

Based in DPF’s San Francisco HQ, this is a full time nonexempt position with occasional evening and weekend work required, along with occasional travel to Southern California and Sacramento.

Core Responsibilities

Work with the Director to:

Create and implement outreach and education plans for policy makers, groups, and demographics that can be encouraged to support repeal of California’s death penalty.
Build and sustain partnerships with other organizations and with key sectors and allies.
Engage DPF’s 100,000-person supporter base through online and offline organizing activities.
Support volunteer networks and local chapters, providing opportunities for events, campaigns, and other activities.
Identify channels for volunteer engagement and development of new leaders, particularly from key constituencies (faith communities, the wrongfully convicted, victims’ families, law enforcement, and conservatives), from communities of color, and among young people.
Represent DPF in a variety of capacities—as a public speaker, in coalitions, and in meetings with elected officials and civic leaders.
Create information resources and educational materials such as brochures, facts sheets, infographics, activist tool-kits, curricula, and resource packets.
Write, edit, and publish content for DPF’s monthly online newsletter, The Focus.
Manage websites (WordPress) for DPF and its related programs.
Manage and analyze social media content and campaigns (Facebook, Twitter) and targeted online advertising (Facebook, Google).
Monitor online engagement of DPF supporters, and create new content and campaigns based on relevant analytics.
Oversee DPF’s CRM system (Salsa) to ensure active supporters remain engaged.
Assist with development activities (events and appeals) as needed.
Supervise interns and volunteers where needed.
Administrative duties may include some data-entry, answering phones, filing, and general office management tasks.
