Job Description
The Community School Coordinator position is a great opportunity for a candidate interested in education, relationship-building, community development, and place-based systems change. We are working to fundamentally shift the approach to program collaboration in New York City public schools.
Zone 126 is a start-up nonprofit organization working to support children and families living in Astoria/Long Island City. Zone 126 is looking for two Community School Coordinators who are integral parts of the community-building and family engagement outreach team. This part-time position calls for a quick strategic thinker who is creative, passionate, and an adept problem-solver.
The Community School Coordinator will work within two of our Zone partner schools:
elementary and middle school or
middle school and high school.
This opportunity is specifically geared towards someone with a “can-do attitude” who is looking to make a difference within the lives of children/youth and families who are living within public housing. Youth Development professionals strongly urged to apply.
Overall Responsibility:
This part-time position will focus on working within two of our Zone schools (elementary/middle school or middle/high school setting) with students and their families that live in the Zone (Zip Codes 11101, 11102, and 11106) The Community School Coordinator will be responsible for building strong school relationships, strong partner organization relationships, and increasing parent/family engagement to provide students with much needed support. Zone 126 supports students and their families, from cradle to career. The Community School Coordinator will be responsible for identifying students in need of additional support, and connecting them with the programs they need to succeed.
S/he will work with school staff to identify and target Zone students and families within their respective schools that may need additional support services (early childhood care, academics, out of school time programming, health, nutrition, and more). The Community School Coordinator will serve as the lead representative of Zone 126 on site at the school level, and will have an in depth understanding of our school based supports that will help to provide opportunities that put our students and their families on a path to success.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
In-School Program Management:
Coordinate and support Collective Impact programs within the school setting.
Maintain up to date and accurate records on students and families progress within Collective Impact programs.
Provide opportunities for families to gain in depth insight into college and career options, job strategies, and future goals.
Family Engagement
Help build a culture within the school that values parent/family input.
Develop and lead workshops that are specific to the needs of the school community, and the Zone (e.g. Getting Your Child Ready for the New School Year; Why 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency Is A BIG Deal; Summer Learning Loss: What Is It and How to Combat It?).
Coordinate all aspects of Collective Impact programs that include planning trips, special outings, and leadership activities for students and their families.
Connect families with the programs they need during critical student transitions points (Pre-K to Kindergarten; 2nd grade to 3rd grade; elementary school to middle school; middle school to high school, etc.).
Organize events that will increase parental and community involvement (e.g. Back to School, Parent Teacher Conferences, Holiday Celebrations).
Partnership Development
Attend relevant meetings on behalf of Zone 126 and provide updates on Collective Impact programs.
Assist in the development of Implementation Action Plans (IAP) that logistically map out the role of all parties in launching a Zone program.
Ensure constant and effective communication between partner organizations and families as well as with the Zone 126 senior management team.
Support the Director of Collective Impact Partnerships in making assessments on services needed to uniquely support each school’s individual needs.
Evaluation
Responsible for collecting data from all Zone students/families in Collective Impact programs including: Parent Data Consent Agreement, Photo Consent, and Pre- and Post-Survey Assessments.
Organize data, perform quality assurance checks, and conduct case management for all Collective Impact programs at assigned schools.
Responsible for collecting and maintaining records on attendance of all Collective Impact programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in human services, non-profit management, education psychology, social work, or related field
At least 1 year of experience in a non-profit in an administrative and/or project management capacity
Prior work experience in urban education a plus
Experience working with children/youth and families
Proven verbal and written communication skills
Exceptional attention to detail and interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Proven ability to manage multiple complex assignments in an efficient and effective manner
Demonstrated ability to exercise leadership and effectively work independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Understanding of New York City public housing and Queens neighborhoods (a plus but not required)
Bilingual a plus (Spanish)

REPORTS TO: Community School Director
Working Relationships: The Family Engagement Coordinator will work cross-functionally with the Vice President of Collective Impact Partnerships, Data and Evaluation Coordinator, and Development & Communications Coordinator.
This position is part-time for 25 hours a week
