Zone 126 is a growing nonprofit organization working to support children and families living in Astoria/Long Island City by building Cradle-to-Career Community Schools.
Community Schools are a key strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of schools. Community Schools are equipped to better serve
the needs of families so that students come to school equipped and able to learn with the long-term goal of being college and career ready.
Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs. In Community Schools, parents are real and active partners in their children’s education, the school climate is joyful and positive, expanded learning opportunities are standard.
An integral part of this approach is the integration and alignment of school-and community- based services throughout an expanded learning day (that includes health and wellness, nutrition, mental health counseling, academic enrichment, early childhood services, and more).
Job Description
Zone 126 is working to fundamentally shift the approach to program collaboration in New York City public schools, and the Community School Director (CSD) will serve as an integral of this work. The CSD will be a leader within the school building, and work side by side with the Principal and on behalf of Zone 126 to coordinate programs and services for the school.
This full-time position calls for a quick strategic thinker who is creative, passionate, and an adept problem-solver. This opportunity is specifically geared towards someone with a “can- do attitude” who is looking to make a difference within the lives of children/youth and families who are living in public housing.
The CSD will be responsible for building strong school relationships, strong partner organization relationships, assisting with increasing attendance and enrollment, and increasing parent/family engagement to provide students with the holistic support services they need. The CSD will be responsible for identifying students in need of additional support, connecting them with the programs they need to succeed, and tracking their progress over the school year.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: In-School Program Management:
• Coordinate and support Collective Impact programs within the school setting
• Maintain up to date and accurate records on students and families progress within Collective Impact programs
• Provide opportunities for families to gain in-depth insight into middle school/high school transition, as well as college and career options, job strategies, and future goals
Family Engagement:
• Help build a culture within the school that values parent/family input
• Develop and lead workshops that are specific to the needs of the school community, and the Zone
• Coordinate all aspects of Collective Impact programs that include special outings and leadership activities for students and their families
• Connect families with the programs they need during critical student transition points (Pre-K to Kindergarten; 2nd grade to 3rd grade; elementary school to middle school; middle school to high school, etc.)
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, human services, non-profit management, education psychology, or social work; Master’s Degree preferred
• Bi-lingual skills is a plus (Spanish)
• Must have at least 3-5 years worth of experience in supervisory program management within a school based setting.
• Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families and communities from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds
• Must have experience working in school based settings, with knowledge around working in low-income communities
• Ability to build strong working relationships within the school setting, as well as with partners, and the community
• Proven verbal and written communication skills
• Exceptional attention to detail and interpersonal skills
• Proven ability to manage multiple complex assignments in an efficient and effective manner
• Hiring is contingent upon DOE and DOH fingerprinting and background clearances
Partnership Development:
• Attend relevant meetings on behalf of Zone 126 and provide updates on Collective
Impact programs
• Ensure constant and effective communication between partner organizations and families as well as with the Zone 126 senior management team
• Support the Vice of Collective Impact Partnerships in making assessments on services needed to uniquely support each school’s individual needs
Evaluation:
• Organize data, perform quality assurance checks, and conduct case management for all Collective Impact programs
• Responsible for collecting and maintaining records on attendance of all Collective
Impact programs
