Credential Elementary Teacher – Good Shepherd Shelter of Los Angeles

POSITION SUMMARY: Teaches a self-contained classroom, classroom grades range from TK (transitional kinder) to 5th grade in a non-profit school. The school is located within a shelter. The teachers in the Shelter School strive to imbibe the four essential values of Good Shepherd philosophy: individual worth and dignity, mercy, reconciliation and zeal for the healing of each person. The teacher also has the unique opportunity of instilling in the children these enduring values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL:

1. Plans/teaches lessons for a group of approximately 5-10 children in various academic and co-curricular subjects.

2. Plans/implements various activities for the whole group, such as sports, outdoor activities, crafts andart.

3. Attends appropriate meetings and works closely with the Interdepartmental team (teachers, therapists, apartment living staff, and Executive Director) in coordinating services and ensures quality of services for each client.

4. Oversees volunteer classroom aides for individual children in the group.

5. Attends weekly teachers’ meetings and monthly in-service training sessions.

6. Records daily classroom attendance on attendance sheet and submits it at the end of each trimester.

7. Records assignment/ test grades in grade books / sheets, when applicable, and uses them to prepare report cards.

8. Prepares report cards each trimester, from cumulative grade sheets, and makes copies for parent and school files.

9. Holds parent-teacher conferences to help facilitate parental involvement according to School expectations.

10. Implements discipline policy and rewards system to promote positive educational environment.

11. Gains understanding of empowerment philosophy and applies to interactions with mothers and children.

12. Reports academic concerns to the Supervisor.

13. Reports behavioral concerns, using behavioral log on Google Docs.

14. Reports behavioral concerns and progress to Mental Health Department or the Supervisor.

15. Works with school staff to plan for School and Shelter events.

16. Rotates supervision of playground, play activities, and snack monitoring during recess/ lunch.

REQUIREMENTS:

Teaching credentials and CLAD certified.
