Development Director – California Student Sustainability Coalition – Berkeley, CA

The California Student Sustainability Coalition is hiring a Development Director to design, manage, and coordinate the organization’s development and fundraising operations.

Development Director Activities

The following activities draw from current operations and are subject to change depending on the organization’s growth and development.

Identification of Resources

Identify and secure resources to support and grow CSSC’s general capacity, campaigns and programs. The Development Director will conduct research, record foundation and donor relationships, and manage a grants calendar. This includes foundation and corporate grants, in-kind support, and major donors. The Development Director should understand ethical financing and relational organizing.

Planning and Strategy Development

Design and implement an organizational Fiscal Year Development Plan and track quarterly progress. This will be conducted with support from CSSC’s Board Development Committee.
Work with CSSC leadership and Senior Campaign and Program Staff to determine needs and growth opportunities.
Work with Senior Staff and the Program Committee to organize and assess critical results data and evaluation metrics.
Work with Senior Staff on updating a strong pitch kit to promote our campaigns, programs, and leadership platform with foundation and donor prospects.

Maintain and Cultivate Key Partner Relationships

Maintain strong relationships with CSSC’s funders, donors, and organizational partners.
Represent organization at relevant social and work-related functions.
Cultivate new donor and funder relationships; especially with local, regional, and state prospects.

Reporting

Maintain CSSC’s grant reporting requirements and work with CSSC Senior Staff to track relevant metrics and provide progress reports on grant activities.
Consistent updates on activities will be presented to CSSC’s Board of Directors, the Development and Finance Committees, and at leadership retreats with the leadership base.

Qualifications

A background in fundraising and organizational development is required. Experience in fundraising for student leadership/training programs, climate justice campaigns, and social justice efforts is strongly preferred.
Understanding of equity and social justice is required. You must be able to communicate with a broad range of people and institutions confidently and effectively, with a critical analysis of power, privilege, race, class and gender.
Strategic thinking and an “opportunity mindset” is required. You will need to identify possibilities and navigate complex funding and movement landscapes. Diplomatic skills and good judgement are required.
Experience in self-management and remote-working is strongly preferred. Our Senior Staff is highly autonomous. You should be a self-starter, comfortable taking initiative, scoping projects, managing priorities and time, and holding yourself accountable to realistic goals, with the support of colleagues committed to your success.

Commitment

The Development Director is a Senior Staff position. Though considered “full-time” within CSSC’s definition, this position is technically designated by our fiscal sponsor as a temporary, part-time position at 32 hours/week. We prefer having a director based in the SF Bay Area but candidates can be located elsewhere in California. A substantial amount of travel is expected. There is no central office besides that of our fiscal sponsor, Earth Island Institute, so remote-working in required.

Compensation

Starting salary begins at $2,500/month. At this time, the California Student Sustainability Coalition does not offer health benefits coverage. The organization provides a generous time-off policy, and a highly participatory, mutually supportive workplace. We are committed to the personal and professional growth of all staff.

The California Student Sustainability Coalition is a project of the

Earth Island Institute.

The California Student Sustainability Coalition is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to engaging the skills and leadership of people of color, low-income persons, LGBT persons, differently-abled people, and other people from diverse backgrounds. People from these and other historically marginalized backgrounds and communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
