Director Of Academics – Summit – PEP Program

The PEP Program (www.pepprogramnj.org/) is committed to motivating and encouraging selected Summit Public School students, with demonstrated need and the potential to perform to the best of their academic abilities, to aspire to and obtain a post-secondary education and in general, to become productive and responsible members of the community.

The PEP Program Academic Director (AD) reports to the Executive Director (ED), and works to encourage, motivate and help the students reach this potential as they successfully complete middle and high school. The AD works directly with the school, tutors and parents to enhance continually the student experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Middle School through High School

Recruitment – As the key contact for schools and families during the recruitment process:
Presents Recruitment Plan to the Board for oversight and approval
Develops academic baseline standards; and meets with school administration, guidance counselors and teachers to discuss and review admission criteria
Participates on the selection team: reviews applications and conducts student and family interviews with the ED and the Director Secondary & Post Secondary Programs (SPSD)
Issues invitations to join PEP
Orientation — Coordinates and conducts orientation for both new students and new parents; organizing and chaperoning cultural enrichment programs

Student Development – As a partner with the school system in developing a joint plan for student success:
Develops differentiated instruction — Identifies students in need of specific supplemental support; and organizes tutors to deliver instruction based on identified needs; and refers students to appropriate outside services as needed
Develops and applies metrics to assess students’ academic development; works individually with students to set annual goals; and assists each student in measuring progress toward attaining those objectives.
Communicates with parents about students’ academic progress; and assists parents and students in course placement
Exposes students to a variety of educational and career opportunities
Participates in the development of after-school programs.
Serves as a member of the Academic Review Committee (ARC)
Establishes student folders and updates them regularly
Advocacy for the students with school system – Participates in student conferences, and school events and activities as appropriate; and communicates with the school about the student’s status in the PEP Program, including academics and behavior.

Tutor and Volunteer Coordination — Hires and schedules tutors; and evaluates them, to monitor and continually improve teacher quality; conducts periodic meetings with tutors to assess student’s progress; and identifies and schedules volunteers for afterschool programs; and periodically assesses their value to the Program.

PEP Summer Programs — Coordinates one-week Academic/Leadership Programs for all middle school and high school students.

Post-Secondary:
College planning – Works with the SPSD to recommend post-secondary placement, and to organize college or facility tour coordination

College application –Assists students and/or parents in this process, including:

Pre-college testing (such as PSAT and SAT)
Completing FAFSA
Applying for scholarships
Completing college or other post-secondary school applications

The Ideal Candidate Must:
Be collaborative with all stakeholders including the Board and Advisory Network
Evidence mature judgment
Be highly self-motivated and willing to take the initiative

The Ideal Candidate Must Have:
Supervisory experience as team leader with diverse groups
Experience working in secondary education
Strong people management skills
Strong project management skills
Strong presentation skills in small and large group settings
Education: Bachelor Degree required; Master’s degree a plus.
