Director of Education – Los Angeles Conservancy

Tell the Stories of Los Angeles as Director of Education for the Los Angeles Conservancy. Founded in 1978 to stop the proposed demolition of the Central Library, the Los Angeles Conservancy uses a two-pronged approach of education and advocacy to engage communities to protect Los Angeles’ dynamic built environment. We saved the Central Library and many other buildings including the Wiltern Theatre, Wilshire May Company, the oldest remaining McDonald’s restaurant, St. Vibiana Cathedral, and the Century Plaza Hotel. Join us as Director of Education and help us be a stronger voice for historic preservation by reaching out to more people and more diverse audiences.

This is a full time, exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. This position manages the Program Manager and the Educational Outreach Coordinator.

Job Duties

In collaboration with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and staff determine short- and long-term educational programming goals and objectives and develop successful programs, activities and collateral materials.
Direct existing educational programs including our highly-acclaimed film series “Last Remaining Seats; weekly walking tour program; and our fall and spring special tours.
Develop educational programming that expands upon current advocacy efforts and fosters a preservation ethic.
Cultivate partnerships to expand audiences and diversity.
Direct, manage, and enhance the experience of our more than 400 passionate and intelligent volunteers.
Supervise a staff of two to produce programming that reaches over 20,000 people a year.
Prepare and maintain budgets for each program that cumulatively generate $500,000 a year.
Lead and expand our youth outreach efforts.
Serve as a representative of the Los Angeles Conservancy with the media, and at meetings and public events.

Required Qualifications

Five plus years of experience developing and producing educational events is required.
Experience supervising staff and volunteers is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication is required.
Strong computer and team skills are required.
Master’s degree in architectural history, preservation, history, or related field strongly preferred.
Knowledge of historic preservation is preferred.

Salary

Salary is competitive based upon experience. The Conservancy offers a competitive benefits package that includes twelve days of vacation, two personal days, twelve paid holidays, parking, fully-paid health and dental plans, and a 401(k) retirement program.
