This position is based in our international headquarters, located in Westlake Village, California. As part of HOBY’s strategic plan being implemented in advance of HOBY’s 60th Anniversary in 2018, the Board of Trustees has created an Advancement Department to be led by the Chief Advancement Officer (who reports to HOBY’s CEO) to further HOBY’s mission through “ownership” of alumni and volunteer relations, development, and marketing and communications. HOBY’s programming and administration functions report through separate teams to HOBY’s CEO. We are seeking creative, ambitious professionals for our advancement team who are committed to delivering exceptional results to help HOBY grow and thrive.
Director of Alumni and Volunteer Relations
With the support of the CEO and an engaged, mission driven Board of Trustees, the Advancement team is responsible for creating new sustainable relationships and deepening existing relationships with private and public companies, foundations and institutions as well as fostering long-term sustainable connections and relationships with HOBY’s alumni and volunteers. By effectively advocating HOBY’s mission and fostering lasting relationships with our diverse portfolio of constituents, the Advancement team has primary responsibility for ensuring our financial strength and sustainability.
Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer , the Director of Alumni and Volunteer Relations will drive alumni and volunteer engagement, communications and relationships.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS—
Develop and implement a strategy and process for finding and re-connecting with alumni, proactively updating contact information in Alumni Manager database and maintaining accurate alumni and volunteer information on an ongoing basis, with support from Development Coordinator;
Create and execute comprehensive, ongoing communications tactics such as mobile app, newsletters, volunteer recognition emails/letters, social media engagement, etc. specifically targeting alumni and volunteers, in partnership with Director of Marketing and Communications;
Maintain communications and engagement with students as they transition into alumni status;
Create and execute meaningful alumni programming and resources, including but not limited to local networking receptions, scholarships, professional and personal development opportunities, community service projects, HOBY Homecoming during 60th anniversary and more;
Partner with HOBY program staff and affiliates to develop and offer new opportunities for current and potential volunteers to support the organization with their time and talents in ways that support the organization’s overall goals;
Serve as overall relationship manager for alumni and volunteers, in close coordination with other HOBY staff working with these individuals;
Coordinate with the Director of Development to identify alumni and volunteers who are potential donor prospects;
Manage process of alumni logging their volunteer hours through L4S system on an ongoing basis and encourage more alumni to volunteer and report their service hours;
Maintain budget for alumni and volunteer relations;
Competency or position requirements—
Minimum of 5 years of experience, with an emphasis on alumni and/or volunteer relations and management, particularly in an Advancement setting;
Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience required, Master’s degree preferred;
Passion for the mission of HOBY;
Exceptional skills establishing and cultivating strong relationships with all types of people;
Proactive in deepening current supporter relationships and forging new ones;
An entrepreneurial spirit;
Resourceful with a strong ability to creatively solve problems;
Team oriented approach and collaborative mindset;
Outstanding verbal and written communications skills;
Experience building new programs or initiatives.
