TITLE: Domestic Violence/ Sexual Assault / Victims of Crime Legal Advocate

DEPARTMENT: Client Advocacy Program

JOB SUMMARY: This is a professional legal advocate position. This position is responsible for providing legal advocacy to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or victims of crime who are immigrants or refugees. This person will conduct phone screenings, assessments and provide information about legal options available to victims in the criminal, civil and immigration legal system.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Screen victims of domestic violence/sexual assault/ victims of crime accessing services.
Assess client’s needs (medical, housing, DSHS, counseling, and parenting, etc.) and provide necessary community referrals.
Complete a safety plan with each client.
Provide domestic violence/ sexual assault/ victims of crime education to clients, community organizations, police and prosecutor’s offices.
Connect clients to community legal providers; provide support and assistance in obtaining protection orders.
Gather necessary immigration documents for qualifying VAWA petitioners.
Translate documents.

Document client services for agency

Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related field.

Skills: Bilingual in Spanish and English

Understand the dynamics of domestic violence

Knowledge of legal, civil, and criminal systems

Experienced in working with immigrants and refugees

Excellent organizational skills

Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

Demonstrated ability to work independently under tight deadlines

Experience: At least 2 years experience working as a community-based advocate.

2 years experience in legal advocacy preferred.

Experience working with low-income, non-literate, limited English proficient individuals.

Requirement: Pass a background check

Complete 30 hour state certified domestic violence and sexual assault trainings.

Valid Washington state driver license
