Education Manager – Northwest African American Museum – Seattle, WA

THE POSITION

The Education Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of a vibrant education program that enhances the understanding of the history, art and culture of African Americans in the Pacific Northwest. S/he ensures the Museum’s exhibits and learning centers act as a relevant education resource for visitors of all ages. Areas of responsibility include school programs, group tours, public programs, and museum interpretation to build out experiential opportunities for greater understanding of exhibition content.

REPORTS TO: Director of Community Engagement

COMPENSATION: Salary: $ DOE, Exempt. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage, vacation and sick time.

WORKING HOURS: 32 hours per week: generally daytimes, T–F, but flexible to accommodate weekend and evening events.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Develops and implements public programs for children, families and adults including, but not limited to, school tours and activities, educator evenings, Let’s Move events, Youth Curator Program, and storytelling.
Develops programs of lectures, activities, and workshops around particular exhibitions or in response to particular themes and / or public programs.
Leads, creates and implements the Genealogy Center program and education materials.
Builds and sustains relationships with educators, community groups, schools, and partner institutions to further the educational objectives of the Museum.
Facilitates history-inspired activities in the local community in response to requests from schools and community groups or to promote particular exhibitions.
Develops a cohort of teaching artists and educators to expand the reach of NAAM’s program and education content.
Meets regularly with exhibition staff to create activities and programs that expands on exhibition content within the gallery setting.
Facilitates the education advisory committee to represent and promote Museum’s educational programs in order to establish a network of useful and productive partnerships. Convening on a regular basis to elicit conversation and feedback on current education programs and future initiatives.
Identifies and develops a curriculum that is relevant to the K-12 audience and promotes via other professional networks and forums to raise the profile of NAAM’s education program and increase use of curricula and Story Trunks.
Conducts research in support of program development.
Oversees training of docents and assembles training materials to ensure understanding of exhibition content and Museum’s mission.
Participates in departmental strategic planning, goal setting and on-going evaluation.
Maintains appropriate project files and records, and tracks weekly statistics for internal and external reporting.
Evaluates all programs for quality, attendance, educational content, cost effectiveness, etc.
Formulates and manages the education department budget.
Works with development staff to secure funding and other resources to meet education program goals.
Working with colleagues across the Museum (Development, Visitor Services and Membership) to document and track the activities of the Education Department.
Manages production of education collateral materials such as brochures, curricula, posters, fliers, and e-blasts.
Maintains education calendar and the archiving protocols and program documentation, including but not limited to digital files, online donor records, images, and contracts.
Works closely with Director of Marketing and Public Relations Director to send accurate and timely information to our stakeholders regarding education programs, and promote tours.
Manages mailing lists, invitations, ticketing, and other collateral materials to enhance and strengthen visibility of education programs.
Assists Executive Director with various public and special events as designated.
Trains docents, and assembles and manages docent training materials in consultation with Curatorial staff and working closely with Volunteer Manager to recruit a viable cohort.

Essential Qualifications

Experience in successfully developing and implementing museum or school-based public programming.
Excellent writing, speaking, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; and computer literacy.
Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple assignments.

Education & Experience

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preference will be given to candidates with an MA museum studies, history, education or art history.

Must agree to and pass a standard background check.

Some evening/weekend work required.
