Job Description: Full-time elementary school teacher for grades K-6, with a primary emphasis on grades 1-5.
The job responsibilities include:
develop and teach a multi-subject curriculum that engages and respects the different types of intelligence in children
provide opportunities for students to think independently, learn at their individual pace, while implementing curriculum for a collective, classroom experience
implement programs that cultivate emotional intelligence, build healthy social relationships among students and strengthen the school community
guide children from different spiritual backgrounds in meditation, service, and mindful action
create an educational program that integrates experiences in nature
utilize student assessment models that are not based on grades or standardized testing
work cooperatively with teachers and parents as part of the school leadership
FWS is a progressive Quaker elementary school, with a low teacher/student ratio (capped at 14:1 per class). Because FWS is a small school, the new teacher must have the ability to understand and teach all elementary school grade levels. As a parent-teacher run cooperative, it is unique in that parents and teachers work together as leadership of the school. Its mission is to awaken a love of learning in each child, promote academic excellence and prepare children to use their knowledge with creativity and compassion. Requirements:
Strong background in multiple subjects, including math, English, and social studies
BA, with teaching credential
Experience with creating integrated curriculum that can blend the teaching of multiple subjects
Desirable:
Masters degree
Bilingual
Familiarity with progressive, holistic and innovative models of classroom management
Experience with integrating the arts into an educational program
Experience with school cooperatives
Important skills:
Easily adapts to a fluid and flexible school environment
Good oral and written communication skills
Confident, with strong leadership abilities
Work independently, without direct supervision
High level of classroom organization, including record keeping
Maintain a clean, peaceful and enriching physical classroom environment
Ability to inspire creativity
Ability to lead teacher aides and volunteers as an organized teaching team
Regularly assess student academic and social development and appropriately communicate these assessments to other teachers and parents
Identify needs in the school and generate solutions
Ability to participate, set agendas, and facilitate meetings (FWS staff and Curriculum Committee)
Ability to contribute and assist in the development of professional development programs
Ability to listen and incorporate assessments of teaching by other staff and school community
Salary: low to mid (40,000 range, depending on experience, plus benefits): The position is compensated on a 12-month school schedule.
