Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn (Unity) is a grade six through twelve, tuition-free, public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Now in our third year, we serve 320 students in grades 6-8. Our mission is to empower students as scholars and citizens so they may lead fulfilling academic, personal, and professional lives. We accomplish this mission through a rigorous academic program, including a college preparatory curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences, exceptional teaching promoted through systems that develop and recognize expert teachers, extended learning time, and differentiated academic support. In addition, we offer students an engaging co-curricular program that encompasses enrichment courses and elective clubs and athletics, a supportive school culture that fosters students’ socio-emotional development and cultivates character, and ample opportunities for active community involvement.
Job Description
The faculty plays an essential role in establishing Unity as a model educational institution. Most critically, faculty members equip students with the knowledge and skills needed – including the desire and capacity to learn independently, think critically, and communicate proficiently – in order to experience secondary and postsecondary success. Unity’s ESL teacher provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing in students sound, foundational listening, speaking, reading, writing skills in English across a variety of genres and purposes. In addition, this individual fosters in students a confidence in and appreciation for their abilities to engage in courses of study in English and acquire the English language.
Responsibilities
Design and implement engaging instruction to all of Unity’s English Language Learners, either through push-in support in the general education classroom or in small group or individual sessions, that leads to English language fluency and academic success
Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards
Lead or assist with administration of NYSESLAT and all other assessments, including those that may be necessary to identify ELL students.
Create and maintain strong relationships with parent/guardians while remaining sensitive to different families’ cultures, values, and needs
Initiate and maintain timely communication with all parents/guardians (i.e. weekly progress reports, notes home, in-person meetings) that explains the ESL program and their individual student’s learning progress and needs
Assist instructional staff with adapting lessons to meet needs of ELL students and provide ongoing training on best practices for teaching ELL students
Actively participate in team meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer staff development
Key Qualifications
A proven track record of promoting student learning in the classroom; at least two years of experience in classroom teaching experience preferred
Strong understanding of special education laws and requirements as demonstrated by an undergraduate or advanced degree in her/his respective discipline; appropriate state certification as a special education teacher along with any other required credentials
Demonstrably strong organizational and classroom/course management skills
Expertise in working with diverse populations of students and families, and in differentiating instruction to fully support the needs of diverse learners
An acumen for actively engaging students in her/his own learning, academically and non-academically
A demonstrated openness and responsiveness to constructive feedback and a strong commitment to continuous improvement and professional growth
Strong written and oral communication skills and experience working collaboratively in team settings
Approaches the profession with maturity, humility, versatility (i.e., embraces the ambiguity and excitement associated with start-ups), a solutions-mindedness with a strong work ethic, and, of course, a sense of humor
