EducationWorks (EW) is a nonprofit organization providing support for economically disadvantaged communities in Philadelphia and Chester, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey. The organization has approximately $9 million in annual revenues and approximately 287 employees (full-time and part-time). By tackling core issues like literacy, graduation rates, safety and social development, EW equips individuals with the tools needed to stay safe, finish school, make better choices and become more productive members of their communities.
The current Executive Director, Martin Friedman, founded EW. He is a high performing, highly regarded, capable, and widely respected leader, and is planning to retire in the second half of 2015 after a distinguished 20+ year career with EW. The organization has embarked on a national executive search for his successor. Ideally, the new Executive Director will join EW in the second half of 2015 to ensure a seamless, effective transition and assimilation.
The Executive Director will have overall responsibility to provide direction and leadership towards the fulfillment of EW’s philosophy, mission, strategy, goals and objectives. He/she will be responsible for all internal activities and external relationships and for articulating a compelling mission and vision to all stakeholders. Critical to overall success in the position will be the Executive Director’s ability to provide a strong vision and strong leadership for the organization. The Executive Director will be a driving force in shaping EW’s opportunities for future growth and diversification and he/she will lead the organization in further refining and then executing on its strategic plan. The Executive Director will also lead efforts to enhance connections with grantors, corporations, government agencies and major donors to continue to move EW forward during a strategically important time in the organization’s history.
Required Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. At least 5 years of nonprofit leadership strongly preferred. Strong, demonstrated commitment to serving low-income, urban populations. Commitment to quality programs and data-driven program management. A demonstrated track record of successful assimilation and learning in new and complex environments. Deep understanding of nonprofit finance. Ability to navigate political environments. Familiarity with Philadelphia and Southeastern PA communities is preferred. Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget. Success working with a Board, demonstrating the ability to cultivate Board member relationships. Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills. Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, innovative, analytical, and strategic. Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people; ability to identify new opportunities for growth and diversification; and an ability to juggle multiple priorities and the mental agility to meet demands of fast changing environments. The successful candidate will have the highest integrity and values and demonstrate a transparent and collaborative team-based leadership style.
