Grant Writer – New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) – New York, NY

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) has an immediate opening for a full-time grant writer. This person will be responsible for writing letters of inquiry, proposals and reports for foundation, government and corporate grants, as well as assisting with data analysis for a variety of civil legal services programs.

NYLAG provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, serving immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBT community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. Specific responsibilities:

Develop and write foundation, corporate and government grant proposals for general operations and specific projects.
Work with NYLAG development and program staff to understand and clearly articulate in writing a wide array of legal programs focused on areas such as consumer protection, housing, public benefits, healthcare, domestic violence, immigration, and special education.
Track, prepare and submit timely interim reports, final reports and other necessary requirements including financial reports to funders.
Conduct data analysis to track ongoing progress toward contract goals.
Identify new funding sources, create research profiles and draft letters of inquiry.
Help prepare budgets and supporting materials for proposals and applications.
Assist in tracking grants received and analyzing grants pending or anticipated.
Ensure proper crediting of foundation, corporate and government funders in published materials.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, this position is a great opportunity for a creative, highly organized person with exceptional writing skills. Candidates will also have the opportunity to develop strong program performance analysis skills. NYLAG is a fast-growing organization with a staff of 250 and an annual budget of more than $22 million. The agency has more than doubled its size in the last five years and is poised to continue a track record of exponential growth. The grant writer will work within a small development department and will play an integral role in expanding organizational capacity.

The ideal candidate has:

A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
A minimum of two years relevant writing experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting
Basic knowledge of foundation, government and corporate funding community
Exceptional writing, interpersonal and organizational skills
Some facility with budgeting and basic accounting principles
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including with using Excel for data analysis
Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize a diverse workload
A self-starter with strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities
Ability to work with high-level executives
