The Position
Our On-Call Guest Concierges provide exceptional customer service to all visitors, volunteers, and staff, through in-person, telephone, and technological communication. They also create exceptional visitor experiences and a positive impression of the California Historical Society.

We are a small, collaborative, and dedicated staff creating an ambitious and exciting future through public history projects and publications.
Key Outcomes:
Reporting to Programs and Outreach Manager, you will be engaged in responsibilities such as:
Engaging visitors by providing information about the organization’s exhibitions, public programs, library, and collections
Providing front desk coverage during gallery and book store hours, including sales of tickets, memberships, and merchandise
Assisting with setting up, facilitating, monitoring and breaking down public programming and special events
Providing administrative support to assist management in tracking and analysis
Promoting programming through various outlets including regularly posting to CHS social networking sites
Skills, Education and Experience
High school diploma, or equivalent, with a minimum of two years of relevant customer-facing experience in similar settings (an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in history, hotel management/guest services, or other applicable field of study could be substituted for a portion or all of the work experience requirement)
Effective interpersonal skills and a welcoming personality
Resourcefulness and poise to gracefully handle unexpected challenges, complexities, and personalities
Proven skills in core MS Office programs: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Demonstrated and demonstrable verbal, written and digital communication prowess
Good organization and self-management skills
In addition, it would be great if you also have:
Experience in a nonprofit organization or institution of similar composition, mission, and complexity
Visitor services/retail experience, with bookstore/gift shop experience
Bilingual fluency
Things you should know:
Schedule and number of hours will vary week to week based on your availability and our needs. Week-end availability is required. The assignments may rotate between our Yerba Buena gallery location and our exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts in the SF Marina district.
