Literacy Instructor – Super Stars Literacy – Newark, CA

Gain valuable teaching experience while serving in low-income communities. Super Stars Literacy is looking for a passionate individual to provide literacy instruction to K-2nd grade students in Newark, CA. Members receive intensive training and coaching support during their term of service and are eligible for an education award upon completion of their service term.

About Our Organization: Super Stars Literacy (SSL) is a non-profit organization that provides literacy intervention services to low-income school communities in Alameda County. SSL works with children in Kindergarten through second grade who exhibit significant delays in reading skills development and thus are at serious risk of school failure. In addition to building literacy skills, our program seeks to foster the social emotional development of our students and promotes family engagement in our students’ learning. About AmeriCorps: AmeriCorps is a federally funded program that supports a wide range of local service programs by providing grants to a network of local and national organizations and agencies committed to using national service to address critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Each of these organizations and agencies uses their AmeriCorps funding to recruit, place, and supervise AmeriCorps members in intensive service positions where they learn valuable work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship. Position Description: SSL AmeriCorps Group Leaders on Special Assigment (GLSA’s) serve full-time in elementary schools. Members provide one-on-one and small group literacy intervention during the regular school day as well as during the Super Stars Literacy afterschool program. GLSA’s also occassionally lead after-school classes of no more than 16 students.

Member Exeperience: Super Stars Literacy AmeriCorps members serve in a cohort of 29 members who are interested in education, committed to making a lasting impact in their communities, and excited about helping students improve their early literacy skills. Prior to starting in the classroom, members participate in a two-week extensive orientation, and throughout the service term members meet weekly with SSL staff for continued training, coaching meetings, and mentoring.

Desired Qualifications:

Interest in working with children (experience tutoring students or leading large groups of students – i.e. camp counselor – desirable but not required)
An energetic and positive attitude
Communication skills necessary to work with children, school staff, and volunteers
Flexibility and poise when dealing with stressful situations
Experience working with diverse communities or demonstrated commitment to community service

Position Duration: This position requires a full-time commitment until June 24, 2016.

Member Benefits: All SSL AmeriCorps members receive a monthly living allowance of approximately $1,618 per month (before taxes and deductions) as well as Affordable Care Act compliant health insurance. Members with outstanding federal student loans may be eligible for loan forbearance and would not be required to make payments on student loans while in service. Members who complete a term of service are eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award valued at approximately $2,800, which can be used to repay school loans or for future educational expenses.

Eligibility Requirements: All members must pass a NSOPW check, have DOJ and FBI fingerprinting, and tuberculosis clearance prior to the start of the term of service. In addition, applicants must be able to supply a proof of citizenship.
