Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a not-for-profit community development organization serving 8,000 residents a year through a comprehensive array of housing preservation, economic development, community organizing and youth and family support services programs and projects. With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. CHLDC’s Afterschool Literacy Project focuses on the development of higher order reading skills in program participants, with an emphasis on 2nd grade students, at three elementary school afterschool programs. This program is funded by the Brooke Astor Fund, managed by the New York Community Trust, and operates in partnership with the following CBOs: Chinese American Planning Council, CAMBA, and TASC.
Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for one (1) full-time Literacy Manager in the Youth and Family Services division. This position is salaried for 35 hours per week.
Principal Duties:
The person filling this position is expected to:(1) be on-site at program locations on most days; (2) research and develop instructional strategies, materials and lesson plans and to facilitate staff development workshops; and, (3) provide group and/or individual assistance to afterschool staff, including the following:
Coordinate all aspects of the project between CHLDC and partnering schools, and between CHLDC and CBO project partners.
Research and develop instructional strategies, materials and lesson plans.
Work closely with Program Directors and Educational Specialists to build a sustainable and replicable program model which can be expanded to other CHLDC program sites and across different grade levels
Directly supervise the part-time Coordinator at new program fully Funded by this grant at PS 108.
Update and create library of resource materials such as lesson plans, instruction materials and reference guides for program staff.
Manage classrooms and small groups effectively to maximize participant learning.
Provide formal and informal observations of staff members leading activities with children and offer professional feedback and support.
Work one-on-one with staff members who need additional professional support and guidance in regard to infusing literacy learning into program activities.
Model and teach effective strategies for literacy instruction to staff.
Model and teach effective classroom management strategies for staff.
Facilitate professional development workshops for CHLDC staff.
With senior managers, represent agency to the funder, grantee partners, evaluators and to the larger network of Astor Fund Reading Improvement Initiative grantees.
Participate in administrative and staff meetings as requested.
Provide all required information for reports to CHLDC management and/or to funders.
May serve as program staff substitute, as needed.
Tasks may be modified, expanded and/or assigned over a period time.
Position Requirements:
Certified Public School Teacher with at least five (5) years of experience focused on early grades literacy learning and elementary education;
Must have experience facilitating professional development for instructional staff;
Experience in out-of-school time settings preferred;
Master’s degree required.
Other Requirements:
Must obtain Dept. of Health, Dept. of Education fingerprint clearance; doctor’s note certifying good health; proof of negative results from TB test; Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance and State Central Registry (SCR) clearance.
Ability to maintain State Central Registry (SCR) clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment.
Ability to adapt to the culture and environment of a public school.
After school programs operate Monday through Friday for 3 hours directly after day school dismissal.
May be required to work Holiday Program Days (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Spring Recess days, Chancellor’s Day).
