Managing Director – Urban Education Academy – San Francisco, CA

The Urban Ed Academy (UEA), is a rapidly growing organization that comes out of the critical need to ensure that boys from challenged communities possess the skills and ability to complete the educational process. This academically focused program provides comprehensive support to boys with specific intent to close the achievement gap and address issues of long standing poverty in disenfranchised communities. Our mission is to address long-standing issues of economic and social disparity in communities by focusing on increasing the educational attainment of boys of within these communities. UEA introduces its core project, SMART Saturdays or Study, Move, Achievement, Responsible, Transitions. SMART offers year round educational enhancement opportunities afterschool and each Saturday targeting 500 boys in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades throughout San Francisco’s school system. The innovative strategies SMART employs build academic proficiency and target areas identified as most critical to the academic success for boys.

Position Description
Urban Ed Academy (UEA) is seeking a leader who can directly engage with our community and key community partners and stakeholders. This leader will shape and contribute to our future strategic plan, partner with a highly talented and motivated staff in executing our priority programs and collaborate with our board to drive further growth.

Reporting to the Board President, and serving as an integral member of the executive team, the Managing Director provides strategic leadership and direction for UEA’s fund development, operations, communications and finance planning including: budget and accounting; contracts and grants; personnel; office administration; and fundraising. The Ideal candidate supports excellence in operations, and a high-functioning team that embodies UEA values. S/he designs, plans, and implements new approaches and systems, innovating as needed, to enable UEA to accomplish the ambitious goals it has set for the coming years to UEA’s mission is to address long-standing issues of economic and social disparity in communities of color by focusing on increasing the educational attainment of boys of color. The Managing Director provides updates and analysis to the Board of Directors.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic, committed, mature leader with at least 5 years of experience overseeing fiduciary responsibilities, financial planning and operations and transactions, talent management, information technology, other operations, and development. S/he will have participated in strategic planning and managing organizations during periods of growth and change and have a proven track record of strategic decision-making in a fast-paced environment. Ideal candidates will have experience in more than one sector: non-profit, philanthropy, business and government.

Responsibilities

UEA Leadership
• Participate as a member of UEA’s executive team, and contribute to the strategic direction of the organization
• Act as an example of, and set the tone and culture of UEA consistent with UEA’s mission and values
• Ensure alignment with overall strategic goals
• Work closely with and deliver reports to the Board of Directors and Advisory Council
• Represent UEA externally

Finance, Accounting, and Grants Management
• Direct and oversee all aspects of the finance & accounting, contracts & grants management functions, annual audit process, and staff
• Provide leadership for financial reporting and analysis, and oversee accounting systems to ensure accurate and timely reporting to government funders and charitable foundations. Oversee and provide leadership for the execution of UEA’s annual budget including revenue and expense forecasting
• Provide leadership to development of the annual budget and continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives
• Oversee strong system of internal controls (checks and balances) and compliance
• Support the work of the Board of Director’s Finance Committee and Audit Committee
• Provide input to and assist in advancing UEA’s fundraising, revenue, and capital deployment strategies and objectives

Talent, Technology, Office Operations
• Develop, manage, and oversee all human resource management (HRM) and talent management policies, procedures, programs, and information systems
• Manage UEA’s compensation plan and employee benefit program
• Lead talent acquisition process and performance management process
• Oversee UEA’s organizational development initiatives including diversity and inclusion program and facilitate trainings throughout the organization
• Oversee UEA’s development and deployment of technology across the organization
• Oversee management of office and facilities

Development
• Provide leadership and direction to UEA’s fundraising team
• Oversee and provide strategic direction to the solicitation of grants, loans and other investment capital from foundations and corporations, banks, impact investors, and government
• Oversee planning of events such as UEA’s annual Benefit and donor volunteer events
• Contribute to building and maintaining existing relationships with funders and investors
• Provide stewardship to the Board Development Committee, ensuring that Board members have meaningful roles in UEA’s fundraising planning and activities
• Educate, engage, and activate critical stakeholders across the organization in support of development

Marketing & Communications
• Oversee strategies and initiatives to increase awareness and support of UEA’s work and help the organization reach its fundraising, policy, employer engagement, and other mission-related objectives
• Work to strengthen UEA’s brand and influence across the sector and beyond
• Foster cross-team collaboration in the creation and implementation of marketing and communications strategies and initiatives

Essential Qualifications
• At least 5 years of experience in financial management and budgeting, and business operations and systems
• Experience managing philanthropic and federal and state government contracts and grants
• Familiarity with financial statements and balance sheets. Knowledge of/experience with GAAP requirements. Familiarity with most current OMB guidance for contractors, and FAR.
• Experience overseeing financial transactions: grant making, lending and/or impact investment preferred
• Demonstrated experience leading or overseeing development/fundraising growth campaigns
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the field of human resources; knowledgeable about current human resource related legislation, laws, and best practices
• Sound business acumen, management reporting, project management, and problem solving
• Demonstrated ability to create a cohesive strategy and execution plan and achieve results
• Proven experience developing cooperative, productive relationships across sectors and disciplines with people at all levels within and external to the organization
• Exemplary interpersonal skills, including demonstrated supervisory, mentoring, and team-building experience. Proven ability to coalesce a team and bring a sense of humor and fun.

• Skill working with Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint and ability to work extensively at a computer
• Bachelor’s degree required (strong preference for MA, MBA, MPH)
