Master Literacy Coach (K-3rd) – The Literacy Lab – Kansas City, MO

POSITION SUMMARY

K-3 Master Coaches are literacy experts who will be trained in the Reading Corps model and are responsible for ensuring that the program is implemented with fidelity to maximize student growth in reading. Master Coaches provide direct coaching and support to a team of school-based Internal Coaches and full-time Missouri Reading Corps tutors at 5-10 high-need Kansas City elementary schools. This support takes the form of real-time coaching and modeling, delivering trainings, providing regular observation of interventions, reviewing and analyzing student data, and problem solving around program implementation challenges. The K-3 Master Coach for the Missouri Reading Corps will work a flexible schedule of approximately 20 hours per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

    A. Training

Participate in a 3-day tutor Summer Training Institute
Participate in and help plan appropriate follow-up trainings during the school year
Be trained in the Reading Corps model with the goal of becoming a trainer beginning in the 2016-17 school year

B. Fidelity to Reading Corps Implementation

Benchmark preparations: Communicate with Internal Coaches and Reading Corps tutors about preparations for fall, winter, and spring benchmarking.
Assessment fidelity checks: Perform assessment fidelity checks with Internal Coaches as the Reading Corps tutors administer benchmark assessments to ensure reliability and to verify that data is being recorded completely and entered in a timely manner for each student.
Alignment of tutoring: Facilitate ongoing communication with Internal Coaches about the alignment of Reading Corps tutoring with the core literacy curriculum and individual student reading needs.
Selection of Reading Corps students: Provide consultation support as needed to schools regarding identification and prioritization of students who will participate in the Reading Corps program.
Assessment data: Support Internal Coaches in supervising and monitoring the collection of benchmark data and progress monitoring assessment data. Ensure that progress monitoring data is recorded weekly in the EdSpring database.
Assessment interpretation and feedback: Participate in assessment feedback sessions monthly at each site. Each session will last approximately one hour per tutor, depending on the needs. The assessment data and/or individual progress of students will be reviewed and tutors equipped to adjust the tutoring for each student based on individual progress and challenges.

    C. School and Program Support

Clarification of program model: Meet with the administration and/or teaching staff at school sites to ensure that school teams understand and support the Reading Corps program model.
General literacy support: Support Internal Coaches in providing direction to tutors and teaching teams regarding literacy-related issues or questions (i.e. intervention implementation, student engagement, assessment, data entry, etc.)
Updates: Provide program updates to Internal Coaches and participate in regular meetings with the Program Manager.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Elementary Education, Early Literacy and Reading Development, or Response to Intervention/Data-Driven Decision Making
Positive personality with a flexible, can-do attitude and the skills to be an effective ambassador for the Missouri Reading Corps
Ability to work well and problem solve independently
Knowledge and experience using curriculum-based measurement
Knowledge and experience using scripted reading interventions (Standard Treatment Protocol)
Knowledge and experience working within a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework
Experience consulting with teachers about reading instruction, interventions, and assessment
Experience as a trainer
Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills with individuals, teams, and administrators
Preferred degree: Reading/Literacy, Educational Psychology, Special Education

This is a contracted position with The Literacy Lab, the non-profit organization that operates the Missouri Reading Corps. School locations will be in Kansas City, MO. The hourly rate is $60 per hour. The position will require approximately 20 hours per week from August 2015 to June 2016.
