Principal – Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School – Brooklyn, NY

Position: Middle School Principal

The School

Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School is part of a network of 11 Expeditionary Learning (EL) schools in New York City and is the NYC network’s first charter school. Launch opened its doors in 2012 in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to its first 6th grade class, and currently serves students in 6th-8th grade. EL is a proven educational model being implemented in over 150 district, charter and independent schools across the country. Expeditionary Learning balances both academic rigor and character development through experiential, project-based learning. Launch is seeking a Middle School Principal to lead a highly motivated, curious, intelligent, and passionate staff of educators.

Position

The Principal is responsible for being the leader of both school culture and school academics. The principal will lead and manage a team of administrators and teachers in order to ensure that students demonstrate dramatic gains in academic achievement while also developing strong character skills based on the Launch Habits of Heart and Mind (Accountability, Compassion, Craftsmanship, Wonder, Mindfulness and Perseverance). The principal will lead based on a clear and cogent vision for instruction and for student development. Launch is seeking a leader with vision who can lead by example and support others in executing on that vision.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Student Achievement

Ensure that all students demonstrate dramatic gains in achievement
Focus relentlessly on student production of high quality work
Foster the development of the Habits of Heart on Mind in all students and track student progress in demonstrating the Habits
Lead all aspects of the instructional program
Expertly analyze student achievement data of all types in order to drive achievement

Coaching, Supervision and Evaluation

Supervise and coach a team of school leaders to ensure their continued growth and their ability to lead others
Establish, maintain and lead a comprehensive teacher coaching program that pushes instructional excellence in all classrooms and fosters a culture of practice and improvement
Plan and manage weekly professional development for teachers that is high leverage and that meaningfully supports school wide growth and achievement
Formally supervise, observe and evaluate all instructional staff

School Leadership

Model the Launch Habits of Heart and Mind and relentlessly work to foster the habits in others
Create a culture of care, respect and achievement in which all students can thrive
Build strong and positive relationships with students, parents and staff
Select and continually develop a highly motivated team of teachers that are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that students achieve
Foster a growth mindset amongst all instructional staff
Implement systems and structures that ensure that the school runs efficiently and effectively

Candidates should have:

Minimum 4 years urban teaching experience
Minimum 2 years in a role successfully leading a team of adults
Middle school experience
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)
