Program Leader/Teaching Artist – The Berkeley Youth Institute – Berkeley, CA

GENERAL FUNCTION: The Youth Institute Program Leader, under the supervision of the Program Manager, helps develop and implement summer and school year curriculum. This staff person provides mentoring and digital media instruction for YI program participants.

The Berkeley Youth Institute Program Leader must possess an understanding of working with low-income communities and the education issues associated with the population. Experience working with teenagers in a secondary-educational setting is essential to effectively carrying out the duties of the position. They must be able to pro-actively connect with youth, and lead programming. He/she must also possess a strong working knowledge of various digital media.

This is a part time position that works 15-20 hours/wk during the school year (35 hours/wk during summer program).

Only candidates looking for longer-term employment will be considered (at least 2 years).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED and at least 2 years relevant work experience. A degree in media related field is preferred. Candidate must display working knowledge of educational case management for teenagers from low-income families. Experience working with diverse populations is a must. Superior interpersonal capacity is necessary. Candidates must pass DOJ background check. Staff must have knowledge of and experience working with digital SLRs and accessories, Abode Creative software (mainly Illustrator, Photoshop, & Premiere Pro), music production software (GarageBand, Logic X Pro, Pro Tools) and various web-building platforms such as Tumblr, WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, etc.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

Intermediate Spanish strongly preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for Youth Institute participants.

Supervise and assist Youth Institute participants on individual and group projects

Plan and lead organized workshops, activities, and projects twice a week during school year

Communicate with Youth Institute Program Manager and other YMCA staff in accordance with YMCA communications policy

Oversee daily set-up, break-down, and maintenance of equipment

Plan end of summer celebration

Plan and attend quarterly events such as showcases, potlucks, games, movie nights, etc.

Participate in Youth Institute Wilderness retreat in June

Case management & outreach to parents/stakeholders

10.Other duties as assigned by Youth Institute Program Manager

PAY RATE:

$17/hr
