PROGRAM MANAGER – NEWARK, CA

The Super Stars Literacy, Inc. (SSL) Program Manager’s primary responsibility is to lead and develop a team of 8-10 AmeriCorps Group Leaders who are directly responsible for operating SSL’s early literacy and social emotional development program in Title I elementary schools in the Oakland/East Bay region. The Program Manager plays a crucial role in coaching the Group Leaders and ensuring that they quickly develop the skills necessary to operate a successful program. In addition, the Program Manager will ensure that each school-based program runs effectively, that students are making accelerated progress in their literacy and social-emotional skills, and that relationships with school staff are strong.

Organization Overview

Super Stars Literacy’s mission is to give every child the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement. The program specifically targets at-risk Kindergarten, first, and second grade students; and provides both daytime intervention and after-school programming in the areas of literacy and social emotional development.

Working Relationships

The Program Manager position is supported directly by the Program Director. Additional support and staff resources include: weekly collaborative Program Team meetings, a bank of educational and curriculum resources, and the support of Super Stars’ fantastic staff. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and driven, but who also knows how beneficial collaborative working relationships can be for all stakeholders.

Responsibilities

The Program Manager’s primary objective is to provide quality assurance for his/her school sites, ensuring that SSL programs at each school are consistent, high quality and effective. Responsibilities include:

Coaching and Development of Group Leaders (70%)

Manage and support a team of 8-10 Group Leaders across three school sites, serving as the primary program supervisor and educational expert.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with Group Leaders at multiple sites; support systems that provide for Group Leader collaboration and empowerment.
Provide on-site support and weekly observations and debriefs for each Group Leader at each school site.
Work with Group Leaders to create and implement strategic, enriching lesson plans.
Facilitate development of action plans for students to ensure maximum literacy and social emotional growth.
Contribute to collaborative planning and delivery of training for Group Leaders.

Relationships with Schools, Families, and Partners (15%)

Serve as liaison to school principals, staff, and community partnership organizations; ensuring strong partnerships; strong communication and strong student cohorts are developed at each program site.
Work in collaboration with Volunteer Coordinator to implement quarterly family engagement events.
Work with Group Leaders to establish and maintain family partnerships through one-on-one parent meetings, on-going communication, and assistance during family events.

Program Logistics (10%)

Design and manage multiple parent orientation meetings, daytime intervention schedules and after-school program schedules.
Assume responsibility for timely and accurate submission of student enrollment, attendance and evaluation data.
Analyze and share assessment data with Group Leaders and school staff.

Qualifications

Mindset

A passion for working with students who need additional support in reading and/or social emotional instruction. A strong determination to dramatically increase the literacy and social-emotional skills of the students we serve, and to be a tangible part of closing the opportunity gap for the children in our communities.

Strong candidates will have:

Significant experience in elementary education and/or literacy instruction for children
Significant experience with behavior management systems and building classroom communities
Experience working with traditionally underserved populations
Experience managing professional staff and/or volunteers
Proven ability to provide strategic coaching and support, to develop skills within others
Success in proactively identifying and solving problems
Ability to self-manage and juggle multiple priorities, relationships, and systems
Ability to communicate proactively, collaboratively, and diplomatically
Experience working in, or leading, collaborative teams
Experience using student assessment data to set and work toward ambitious goals
Experience working with principals, teachers and district staff to convey program success factors and challenges, as well as managing organizational relations
Experience or interest in developing and delivering trainings to adult learners
Excellent computer skills, including MS Office Applications
Access to reliable transportation to travel within a defined geographic region on a weekly basis
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Master’s degree related to education desired
California teaching credential desired
Fluency in native languages of students served (ex. Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin) desired

Commitment: Full time exempt position, some weekends and evenings
