Position Opening – Part-time Prospect Researcher Consultant/Trainer

This is a short-term position for a consultant who can provide training and consultation on matters of prospect research. This position also has potential for longer-term on call prospect research and major donor program development.

About MBA

Founded in 2000, the Mind Body Awareness Project (MBA) is a leading innovator in the development and instruction of mindfulness-based practices with at-risk and incarcerated youth. As an Oakland-based, 501(c)(3) organization, we deliver mindfulness-based programming to Bay Area youth in probation detention facilities, schools, and youth services agencies. The heart of MBA’s work is to provide holistic and highly effective tools that reduce stress, impulsivity and violent behavior while increasing self-esteem, self-regulation and overall well-being.

Position Purpose:

Prospect research consultant/trainer will work closely with our Executive Director and Major Donor Intern in developing best strategies for building and expanding MBA’s donor database. The position reports to the Executive Director.

Consultant will:

Provide effective training and consultation to the Executive Director and Major Donor Intern on major donor prospect research.
Research and identify new major donor prospects that are in alignment with our identified areas of interest using each as a case study for how to do prospect research.
Help develop the major development program for MBA including suggesting specific subscription based or free online prospect research tools that the MBA Project should use for research.
Provide on-call services for additional prospect research and consultation.
Contribute new ideas toward overall fundraising strategy and growth.

Experience and Qualifications

2+ years experience and demonstrated success in prospect research for individual donor programs.
Outstanding writing and editing capabilities.
Ability to meet deadlines and thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
Bachelor’s degree.
Proven ability to develop a portfolio of new prospects.
Familiarity with fundraising databases (Salesforce.com a plus) and individual donor research tools (Marts and Lundy, Wealth Engine, Relationship Science and other similar tools and their advantages and drawbacks).
Ability to respond quickly to new fundraising opportunities and to changing priorities.
Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills.
Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail, accuracy, and pacing.

Strong preference for:

Someone based in the San Francisco Bay Area who would be able to join us at our Oakland office for several whole or partial days for consulting and training purposes (our office is directly adjacent to the Oakland Fruitvale BART station).
Experience with issues of psychology, youth development, mental health, social justice.
Strong knowledge of individual donor funding landscape as it relates to the Mind Body Awareness Project’s mission.
Personal mindfulness practice. MBA’s organizational culture is based in mindfulness.
