REAL HARD AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

The mission of Oakland Kids First (OKF) is to create leadership opportunities for young people to transform their schools so that all youth graduate with the skills and motivation to reach their dreams. Founded in 1996 by a group of youth service agencies, OKF ensures that Oakland public high schools are places where students are empowered to use their civic and cultural leadership skills through academic peer mentoring and meaningful leadership training to create a culture of peer support, mutual accountability, and improved learning and achievement for all students.

OKF programs include REAL HARD (Representing Educated Active Leaders Having a Righteous Dream) after school youth leadership program focused on implementing a school-wide Code of Respect at three high schools; the school day Peers Advising Students to Succeed (PASS-2) academic mentoring program; and district partnership to implement a Meaningful Student and Family Engagement initiative.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING:

In partnership with the REAL HARD Program Manager and Director of Youth Programs, implement a two day a week after school youth leadership program that trains youth to be REAL HARD organizers at two Oakland high schools (Oakland Tech and Fremont).
Utilize our core leadership development curriculum to train youth participants to:

1) Conduct outreach and recruit new members
2) Conduct research on school culture and equity
3) Develop and implement culture campaign activities aligned to a school Code of Respect
4) Execute 4 campaign events and activities per school
5) Engage and retain their peers, school staff, and administrators in our school change efforts.

Incorporate community and team building activities including Restorative Justice circles, and off-site activities such as field trips.
Plan, recruit for, and chaperone an annual overnight retreat for youth in December.

PROGRAM PLANNING:

In partnership with Oakland Kids First and REAL HARD program leadership teams, ensure programming aligns to the organizational theory of change and overall REAL HARD vision.
Work collaboratively with the REAL HARD team to develop new program curriculum.
Assess school needs and annual program goals to inform an annual MOU at each school.
Establish annual and quarterly outcomes per school, and set benchmarks for REAL HARD growth and improvement.

DOCUMENTATION:

Develop and document curriculum using organizational curriculum templates and structure. This includes agendas, handouts, materials, and youth contracts in digital and paper format.
Track youth leadership development through academics, personal growth, and skill building.
Record digital footage of programming and share content on REAL HARD social media sites.
Maintain youth contracts, contact information, and stipend documentation for participants.
Document attendance for REAL HARD program days, trainings, events, and culture challenges.

EVALUATION:

In partnership with the REAL HARD Program team, implement annual program evaluation to measure progress made towards prioritized outcomes for REAL HARD.
    Support grant reporting and share impact of programming with school partners.

SCHOOL CULTURE DRIVER

Build relationships and maintain good communication with teachers, administrators, and other support staff at each school to ensure REAL HARD can meet outcomes.
Attend school collaborative meetings, and communicate with after school program coordinators or community school managers as needed.
Support Meaningful Student Engagement strategies and recruit youth leaders to participate in activities in alignment with OUSD’s All City Council and MSFE initiative efforts where applicable.
Provide leadership, visibility and advocacy for REAL HARD Campaigns and events.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Support other aspects of our youth leadership programming as needed- including but not limited to: funder site visits, presentations to the school board, and year end graduation celebrations.
Work in partnership with other program staff to integrate REAL HARD program activities into PASS-2 programming at each school site to support school-wide culture change efforts.
Attend Oakland Kids First staff meetings and retreats, and participate in ongoing strategic planning and organizational strengthening conversations.
Additional duties as needed in the organization – including but not limited to fundraising, sharing stories and media for reporting, and administrative support.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Experience in facilitation, providing leadership training, and modeling youth development practices to support high school age youth. (Preferably with experience serving youth of color).
Experience writing and implementing curriculum for diverse high school age youth.
Experience working with Oakland public high schools.
Restorative Justice and PBIS experience, a plus.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create and model a culture of peer support, collaboration, and appreciation.
Experience in program management and demonstrating impact through evaluation metrics.
Effective planning, organizational, and logistical skills – with an ability to follow through.
Flexible and able to work well both independently and in a small team.
Excellent communication, writing skills, and a sense of humor – a must.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs and Google products.
Must have a car, valid drivers license, and insurance.

Salary range is $37,000- $44,000 commensurate with experience. Employer provides vacation, health, and dental benefits; as well as opportunities for staff development.
