Seeking a Sexual Health Educator – Huckleberry Youth Programs – San Rafael, CA

Huckleberry Youth Programs, in collaboration with BAYAC (Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium) AmeriCorps is seeking AmeriCorps members to work at Huckleberry Youth Programs located in the Canal District of San Rafael. The position is through BAYAC AmeriCorps, a federally funded national and community service program. AmeriCorps members begin August 2014 and ends July 2015. Members spend 32 hours a week (Monday-Thursday) at the San Rafael facility, and 8 hours a week (Fridays) with their regional AmeriCorps team. In addition to a monthly living stipend, AmeriCorps members receive health insurance, child care (if needed), and an educational award of $5,730 at the end of their 11 months of service.

AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Huckleberry Youth Programs (HYP) is a critical provider of essential safety net services for high-needs youth and their families in San Francisco and Marin County. For over 40 years, HYP has developed and maintained prevention programs that promote the health and leadership of youth, and, as a result, divert youth from violence, crime and gang involvement, as well as other harmful behaviors, including running away, drug/alcohol abuse, risky sexual activities, and involvement in the juvenile justice system.

BAYAC AmeriCorps is a collaborative of over 30 community service organizations that serve youth and families in all 6 counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC members commit to a term of service in a FULL TIME position. Members provide direct services to children and youth. BAYAC AmeriCorps also aims to develop emerging leaders and to strengthen communities through the relationships and programs developed by the partner agencies.

SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATOR, AMERICORPS (2 Openings)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Health Educator will be an integral member of the Health Education Team, with the primary responsibility of facilitating sexual health workshops in middle schools, high schools, and at community sites throughout Marin County. The Health Educator will also be responsible for supporting a teen clinic, conducting community outreach, collaborating with teenage volunteers and interns, and participating in training and professional development opportunities.

DUTIES:

Plan and facilitate health workshops in Middle Schools, High Schools, and community sites, on topics including HIV/STD prevention, pregnancy prevention, decision making, communication skills, and healthy relationships

Conduct family planning and sexual health counseling during an adolescent health clinic

Assist in facilitation of a youth peer outreach group addressing healthy relationships and relationship abuse

Participate in community outreach and events

Assist in oversight of and collaboration with teen and college-aged interns and volunteers

Conduct research and develop lesson plans on health issues

Participate in staff meetings, trainings, in-services and regular supervision

Maintain appropriate documentation for activities

Provide support during clinic hours

Participate in BAYAC AmeriCorps Team Days, trainings, and events

Occasional evening/weekend/ early morning work required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or related field

Possess or have easy access to a car, have a valid CA driver’s license, have a driving history that allows candidate to be enrolled into the Agencies auto policy and must provide a copy of an unexpired personal automobile insurance policy

Experience working with youth; Passion for connecting with and engaging young people

Experience training, teaching, or facilitating groups of youth

Proven history of excellent verbal communication and presentation skills

Commitment to adolescent health, equitable healthcare access, and reproductive options/choice.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team

Highly organized, creative, innovative

Ability to take initiative and work proactively

High level of professionalism and ethical standards

Provide a valid First Aid Training certificate, a recent TB test, and medical clearance (completed after hire)

Criminal Justice Clearance required
