The Senior Director for Member Engagement reports to the Chief for Member Engagement and Development and is responsible for assisting the Chief, Executive Management Team, and ASTHO Board of Directors with outreach to and development of state and territorial health officials and alumni members and association governance. This position serves on the senior management team, which proactively works to fulfill ASTHO’s strategic priorities measured through a balanced scorecard. The Senior Director leads a team responsible for:
• In-person and distance educational and leadership development programming for state and territorial health officials and their senior leadership teams.
• Development and support of a network of ASTHO alumni, or former state health officials.
• Support of ASTHO’s network of Affiliated Organizations.
• Collection and maintenance of member demographic information, expertise and interest profiles, and ASTHO service and engagement records.
• Maintenance and sharing of the Association’s history.
• Regular assessment of member needs and satisfaction to inform continuous quality improvement of all of the Association’s member services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Effectively motivate and supervise a team of staff, including a Director of Education and Member Services Specialist, to carry out the above objectives.
• Manage existing foundation and federal grants for orientation, public health education, and leadership development of state and territorial health officials and their leadership team, specifically by:
o Satisfactorily completing proposed deliverables on time, within budget.
o Evaluating deliverables and project goals regularly to inform continuous quality improvement of member services.
o Ensuring compliance with the grantors fiscal and reporting requirements
o Monitoring subcontractors and consultants when applicable.
• Strategically pursue new funding opportunities that support orientation, public health education, and leadership development of state and territorial health officials and their leadership teams.
• Staff the following ASTHO Committees:
o Nominations, which makes recommendations for the association’s officers and annual awards.
o Education, which provides oversight and strategic direction for the association’s annual meeting, SHLI Programming, and other educational offerings provided to state and territorial health officials and their leadership teams.
• Assist the Chief of Member Engagement and Development and Executive Director with association governance, specifically, the elections process, committee nominations and appointment process, and annual business meeting of the membership.
• Work with the meetings/events staff to plan and implement successful association events, including the ASTHO Annual Meeting.
• Work with communications staff to develop and implement marketing plan for member engagement.
• Work with the public policy team to state and territorial health officials, alumni, and affiliates strategically on advocacy efforts.
• Work with the Development Director to foster individual relationships between state and territorial health officials and ASTHO’s Corporate Alliance Members and other private sector partners.
• Work with the Survey Research team to conducts member services related research and analysis.
• Work with the Finance Team to increase collection of dues revenue.
• Work collaboratively with all staff to improve their understanding of the membership and facilitate strategic engagement of current and former health officials in their projects.
• Foster collaborative relationships with representatives of state, federal, and local agencies, national public health organizations, ASTHO affiliates, and other organizations.
• Represent ASTHO as required at meetings and outside organizations, at the direction of the Chief for Members Engagement and Development.
• Perform other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in related field required, master’s degree strongly preferred.
• Five years of directly related professional experience.
• Demonstrated experience in project management, budgeting, strategic planning.
• Prior experience working in governmental public health, a membership association, or other relevant non-profit.

• Ability to develop and maintain collaborative networks.
• Ability to direct, manage, and evaluate work of subordinate staff, as required by the Chief for Member Engagement and Development.
• Ability to manage and develop multiple projects independently and in a team environment, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
• Ability to travel within service area.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with members, management, coworkers, government officials (federal, state, and local), and the general public.
