The Special Assistant performs all special administrative and research assignments for the President of the Academy of Political Science. The President is Professor of Political Science Emeritus and Janet Robb Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus at Barnard College and the Graduate Faculties of Columbia University. The Academy is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1880 that publishes the Political Science Quarterly, the nation’s oldest and most respected social science journal, prints notable books, and sponsors conferences.
Specific job responsibilities include:
Handling administrative tasks relating to the President’s daily schedule
Representing the President when he is not in the office
Drafting correspondence for the President
Acting as liaison between the President of the Academy and the Board of Directors
Preparing drafts of the Academy’s mid-year and annual reports
Updating website content and social media posts
Proofreading with others issues of the Political Science Quarterly
Organizing meetings and special events
Assisting the President (a research professor) in the completion of various scholarly projects, including the publication of books of essays on international affairs and on public policy
The successful candidate must be a self-motivated, well-organized, efficient, and cheerful individual. Additional qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (major in political science, public affairs, or urban studies preferred)
First-rate performance without close supervision
Good interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others
Strong analytical skills and attentiveness to detail
Proven excellence in writing, proofreading, using word processing and spreadsheet/graphing software, and conducting internet based research
Interest in researching federal safety net programs and grant-making foundations
Timely completion of assigned work
Previous office experience
Ease in dealing with the public, and a generally pleasant and calm demeanor
