The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company

The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company is expanding our roster of professional Teaching Artists. Candidates should have a minimum 5 years of theatre arts teaching experience with youth ages 10 to 18.
We are especially interested in Teaching Artists with strong backgrounds in improvisation, physical theatre, applied theatre, directing for theatre, and playwriting.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The US curriculum is comprised of two consecutive 10-week (60-80 hours each) workshop series, one focused on developing a script, the other on producing a play. In these workshops, youth increase their language and writing skills, learn how to work collaboratively, and develop lifelong problem-solving skills.
Our school sites are located in the northeast San Fernando Valley and South LA, and we provide programs for incarcerated youth in probation camps in Malibu Canyon, Santa Clarita, and San Dimas.
QUALIFICATIONS
All US Teaching Artists must hold a valid CA driver’s license and be able to provide their own transportation. Teaching Artists will also be required to undergo a background check at an agency designated by USTC and proof of a negative TB test.
Candidate should possess the following skills or qualities:
Strong classroom management skills
Demonstrated ability to facilitate developmentally-appropriate arts experiences
Experience in long-term curriculum development (year-long programming)
Proven skills at guiding youth through a play-creation process and elevating their confidence to perform in front of peers, family members, and their community
Comfortable working in a team-teaching environment and working collaboratively
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to complete and submit documentation and support data efficiently and on time
Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable
TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Familiarity and comfort with modern technology, including computer systems and software is necessary. Must be able to work weekends and evenings as necessary, drive a motor vehicle, have a valid Driver’s License, and lift at least 30 pounds.

The Unusual Suspects (US) was established in response to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Designed to assist youth in underserved and at-risk environments, US offers a unique theatre arts program that helps participants develop the self-esteem, communication and coping skills necessary to make positive life choices. US also provides community outreach to address localized challenges such as gang violence and school dropout rates.
