The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is seeking a Technical Director to oversee its technical, research and education programs, and act as OMRI’s primary technical representative to government agencies and officials. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Technical Director will be the expert in organic materials, providing support and information to the OMRI Review Program, certifiers, the general public, and relevant governmental agencies both domestically and internationally. The Technical Director will also oversee and grow OMRI’s education and research programs.

The ideal candidate will have notable experience working with organic regulations and a strong understanding and familiarly with organic production and processing in North America. This person will be able to research and analyze complex issues, and clearly communicate technical information to a variety of stakeholders, including organic industry leaders and government officials as well as the general public. The ability to manage projects and programs both independently and with a team is also essential.

Location: OMRI’s offices are located in Eugene, Oregon (Learn more about the City of Eugene). Telecommuting may be an option for the right candidate.
Major Responsibilities:
Serve as OMRI’s primary contact for governmental and regulatory bodies (such as the National Organic Standards Board, the National Organic Program, EPA, FDA and the Canada Organic Regime) regarding material review issues, including writing and presenting comments as needed
Be a technical resource to address and/or resolve difficult or complex issues for the OMRI Review Program and for certifiers
Provide information and support to the public, including writing newsletter articles, representing OMRI at tradeshows, conferences and meetings, and answering questions from the general public
Develop and maintain a research program that supports OMRI’s mission, and manage technical contracts and projects
Oversee OMRI’s education program, including developing and managing technical services and training for certifiers and other groups
Coordinate the work of OMRI’s Advisory Council, including facilitating discussion and decision-making
Oversee or provide assistance with the revision of OMRI manuals and technical publications
Supervise a technical staff member
Collaborate with the Executive Director in grant writing and fundraising to support education and research projects
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in natural sciences, public policy or related field required
Documented training in organic regulations, such as IOIA certification, NOP training, etc.
Minimum of 3 years of experience working with organic standards required
Minimum of 2 years of experience managing employees preferred
