Vice President, Development – Environmental Law Institute – Washington, DC

The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the leading center of environmental law research, policy, analysis, scholarship, and training in the United States. Founded in 1969, ELI plays a pivotal role in the evolution and implementation of environmental law, management, and policy both in the United States and abroad, and is a world leader in strengthening rule of law in the environmental sphere and in enabling environmental governance in public, private, and informal (civil society) sectors. Support for the Institute comes from a mix of law firm, corporate, government, academic, and individual members as well as grants from private foundations, companies, and government agencies.

ELI seeks an accomplished development professional to lead the next phase of fundraising achievement as a key player on its senior management team led by new President Scott Fulton.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As head of the Institute’s three-person Development Office, the Vice President for Development creates and implements plans to raise funds for ELI operations through annual and multi-year giving campaigns. She/he works directly with the President, the Board of Directors, the Board Development Committee, and the Chair of the Campaign for the ELI Fund to cultivate and solicit current and new organizational and individual donors as well as sponsors and supporters of the annual ELI Award Dinner. In conjunction with the Institute’s Research & Policy Division, the VP leads ELI’s corporate and foundation grant seeking program.

The Vice President for Development reports directly to ELI’s President and works closely with individuals across the Institute.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have at least 5 years successful fundraising leadership and a track record in annual giving, corporate, and foundation grant seeking and in developing and running fundraising campaigns. Strong skills required include superior written and oral communication skills, knowledge of cutting-edge fundraising tools and strategies (including harnessing social media vehicles), with keen attention to detail and the ability persuasively to convey to donors and donor prospects the vision, goals, and programs of ELI. Some familiarity with environmental or energy issues is preferred.
