Visitor Services and Resource Development – Mitchell Museum of the American Indian – Evanston, IL

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is one of only a handful of museums across the country that focuses exclusively on the art, history and culture of American Indian and First Nations peoples of the United States and Canada.

This job sharing position contributes to several key roles in the museum’s operations: To support the museum’s fundraising, membership, and external communications programs, coordinate assigned programs and events, oversee admissions and lead group tours through museum, manage museum shop operations, and ensure excellent customer service to the museum’s constituents.

Job Duties:

Provide excellent customer service and promote the museum mission and vision in all activities, work to fulfill the museum’s operating and strategic goals, and represent museum both within and outside the building.

Oversee volunteers (and cover these roles when gaps): process visitor’s admissions, answer and route telephone calls, route mail and general e-mail to museum staff. Record and tabulate attendance and demographic records. Open and close building for the public hours, programs, and events, and monitor museum security.

Coordinate and schedule docents, tours, and space rentals, assemble craft materials, set-up for programs and events, lead or assist with tours, crafts, and programs as needed.

Assist in developing and processing evaluation surveys, newsletters, and membership and fundraising materials. Generate and process mailings. Manage distribution of marketing materials to outside venues.

Maintain Constant Contact database and send e-blasts and e-newsletters, Facebook post, manage and update museum’s website, and maintain museum calendar for public and internal events.

Manage museum store operations, order supplies and inventory, develop new merchandise.

Maintain Giftworks donor database, process donations, and create lists/reports

Assist in facilities maintenance, prep for cleaning service and manage cleanliness between cleanings, notify Director of maintenance issues and assist coordinating contractors.

Manage team of volunteers and docents to assist with these duties

And other duties as assigned

Skills:

Ability to quickly learn and perform all duties timely and with accuracy and efficiency

Experience in customer service and prioritizing multiple tasks to meet deadlines

Experience providing tours and/or public presentations to various age groups

Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Experience with contact management or donor database

Proficiency in operating Microsoft Office Suite , especially Excel, and ability to quickly learn new programs

Reliable transportation

Ability to lift and arrange equipment and furniture

Willingness to pitch in as needed, work independently and as a team

Must demonstrate respect and knowledge of American Indian culture

Ability to cover shifts during museum’s open hours and special events: Wednesday: 9:30-5:30; Thursday: 9:30-2:30; Thursday: 12:30-8:30; Friday: 9:30-5:30; Saturday 9:30-5:30; Sunday: 11:30-4:30 plus special events. Time slots are split between three part-time positions and subject to change but this position must be available for the Saturday 9:30-5:30 and/or Sunday 11:30-4:30 timeslots.
