National Center for Youth Law
The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) (www.youthlaw.org) is a non-profit organization that for over four decades has worked nationally to ensure low-income children have the resources, support, and opportunities they need for healthy and productive lives. NCYL’s successes have led the organization to double in size over the past five years, with a current annual budget of $5 million and a staff of 40 in multiple sites. The majority of NCYL’s funding comes from project-specific foundation grants, although an organizational priority is expanding unrestricted support from individuals and other sources.
Position (to be based in Oakland, California)
NCYL seeks an Development Associate/Manager responsible for supporting all development efforts with specific responsibility for helping to design and implement strategies to increase the organization’s unrestricted funds. A new position at NCYL, core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supporting and expanding our individual giving program, including preparing necessary materials for solicitation of donors and prospects, executing an annual appeal mailing, and processing donor acknowledgement letters
Working with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to build and grow a sustained major gifts program
Developing and implementing new strategies that leverage social media to fundraise
Supporting and expanding efforts to fundraise among law firm
Supporting and expanding efforts to secure cy pres awards
Coordinating and supporting efforts to recruit interns, fellows and volunteers
Working with NCYL’s Communication Team to ensure external communications are developed and leveraged to support fundraising
Managing the donor database, including coordinating and planning for a future data conversion/upgrade, and develop additional infrastructure to support the above activities as necessary
Required Qualifications
No prior development experience required. We are looking for enterprising, personable, highly competent, applicants looking to work in the service of at-risk children.
Commitment to improving the lives of at-risk youth
Commitment to working in, and contributing to, a diverse workplace
Aptitude to quickly learn programmatic content and then to convey that information in clear and compelling written and verbal communication
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple, complex projects and meet multiple deadlines
Excellent communicator
Strong problem solving skills and ability to quickly learn new skills
Willingness to be versatile and flexible in a deadline-driven environment
Desired Qualifications
Specific interest in education, child welfare, juvenile justice, and health care reform
Experience with the systems serving at-risk youth
Fund development experience, including individual giving, and major gifts
Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time position in Oakland, California with flexible hours. Salary is comparable to similar organizations in the Bay Area, with a range of $45,000 to $75,000 annually. NCYL provides health, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, vacation benefits, and an employer contribution to a retirement plan.
