THE POSITION
The Regional Director will be a dynamic advocate who will lead the Orange County/Long Beach Region and will partner effectively with ADL’s national team and colleagues in other California offices including LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara and San Francisco. The ideal candidate will be a visionary, charismatic leader who will drive the program, outreach and fundraising strategy that will raise a minimum of $850,000 annually, and build on the ADL’s presence in the Region. The RD will be a tireless leader, with the gravitas and passion for ADL’s mission to assume a position of influence among the civil rights and Jewish leaders in the region.
With a view to advancing ADL’s mission within Orange County and Long Beach, the RD will provide direction to the office and oversee all office administration functions, including: fundraising, program delivery, leadership development, communications, government relations, fact-finding/research and office management. The RD will represent ADL in the community, to the media and to public officials. She/he will manage, motivate and develop the regional board, committees and staff.
This position is supervised by the Pacific Southwest Regional Director (based in Los Angeles), in coordination with the National Regional Operations team (based in New York), and supervises a team of 1-2 employees.
The Regional Director will:
• Strategize and direct the implementation of ADL programs and policies tailored to local community needs and issues, take initiative as needs arise or create initiatives for new programming as needs arise. Staying current and ahead of the curve or anticipating needs of possible new programming/initiatives is a critical component of this position. These include outreach, programs (conferences and seminars) and legislative networking. Manage education and human relations programming, including longstanding programs in the region and future projects.
• Oversee constituent services, ensuring discrimination complaints and incidents are received and resolved in appropriate and timely ways. Coordinate with National Fact Finding team to direct local fact-finding activities and report results;
• Direct planning and set strategies for meeting regional fundraising goals, including programs, methods and timetables, in collaboration with National and Regional Development staff. Establish and shepherd donor relationships and directly solicit major donors;
• Recruit, develop and work with lay leadership. Establish guidelines for including lay leaders in regional activities and advisory boards and create appropriate training opportunities. Identify community leaders for involvement and recruitment to ADL. Staff a variety of committees;
• Promote visibility and leadership of ADL in the community in addition to establishing, maintaining and cultivating new relationships with appropriate community institutions and leaders, legislators and government officials, media representatives, law enforcement personnel, ethnic and interfaith group leaders and the Jewish community;
• Develop and/or participate in community outreach initiatives partnerships with elected officials, community leaders, and diverse interfaith and cross cultural organizations active within the region;
• Oversee office management activities, including negotiations regarding space, landlord relations, office systems, equipment and supplies. Ensure office operates efficiently and effectively within budget parameters. With National office, establish and monitor regional operating budget;
• Lead, manage and inspire small regional staff team. Recruit, hire and supervise staff, in coordination with the National staff when appropriate, establishing performance standards and monitoring results;
• Represent ADL and give speeches in a variety of forums to promote public awareness of ADL’s mission. Respond to inquiries from the press and from members of the public, demonstrating knowledge of ADL’s policies and positions and relevant local, national and world events;
• Participate in government affairs activities, cultivating key relationships with state, local and national officials, keeping good lines of communication open between the ADL and local policy makers. Advocate for ADL issues in state and local legislature;
• Monitor relevant civil rights lawsuits in the region;
• Contribute to national responses to issues and the development of national initiatives by participating in ADL National meetings and task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills:
• Seasoned Executive with prior leadership experience in a community relations or community services organization;
• Exceptional, 21st Century communication and strategy skills, including strong public speaking and writing skills coupled with the ability to represent complex and diverse issues in an articulate and compelling manner.
• Proven experience in program development, fundraising, volunteer relations, and management;
• Commitment to ADL’s mission and community impact and a strong understanding of present and past civil rights issues;
• Exceptional network-building skills with a track record of developing and maintaining personal and professional contacts and coalitions;
• Positive, well-developed relationships with Orange County community leaders and executives;
• Strong administrative and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and respond to changing priorities;
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent the ADL and to attend community events. Travel within the Southwest region is required, including occasional overnight travel;
• A Bachelor’s degree is required.
