Summary: Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE) is seeking a short-term organizer to run a Rochester-area campaign against the Ginna nuclear reactor. The term of the work will be 20-30 hours per week for 2-6 months, starting as soon as possible.
Background: Alliance for a Green Economy is a coalition of environmental, peace, and social justice organizations working together for a carbon-free, nuclear-free New York. We are the primary watchdog organization for New York’s upstate nuclear reactors, members of the movement to ban fracking in New York, and leaders in the movement to a build a 100% renewable energy system in the state.
The Ginna nuclear reactor, located 20 miles east of Rochester, NY is seeking a consumer bailout because the reactor is losing money. The proposed bailout would raise Rochester area electricity rates and prop up a dirty and dangerous reactor, forcing RG&E customers to pay for the continued production of nuclear waste and radioactive contamination. AGREE has identified preventing this contract from being approved, or influencing the terms of the contract to ensure a near-term shut-down of Ginna, as one of the most promising opportunities to shut down a nuclear reactor in the U.S.
