SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) seeks a legal advocate/paralegal to work in its Tacoma office. The applicant must be fluent in English and Spanish. The advocate will work with individuals detained at the Northwest Detention Center, a regional immigration detention facility that houses up to 1,575 detainees.
LOCATION
This position is located in the Tacoma office of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct daily presentations in Spanish and English to persons detained at the immigration detention center in Tacoma, Washington;
Conduct intakes in one-on-one sessions with detainees under the supervision of staff attorneys;
Conduct self-help workshops for unrepresented detainees seeking relief from removal;
Maintain schedule for daily detention center visits;
Record phone and email messages regarding detainees to be seen;
Provide other support for the LOP program, including creating information packets, maintaining detainee files, etc;
Perform other administrative tasks related to LOP;
Maintain a working knowledge of significant policies, laws and trends in immigration law, particularly as it impacts low-income immigrants and those impacted by the criminal justice system;
Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES
Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and willingness to support NWIRP’s mission, vision and values;
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking;
Ability to manage multiple tasks and to manage deadlines;
Must be fluent in Spanish and English;Commitment to working in a diverse working environment;
Ability to pass eQIP security background clearance1;
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently; and
Proficiency in use of MS Word, MS Access, and MS Excel.
